Lo chali main – Lata Mangeshkar – Raam-Lakshman – Renuka Shahane | Hum Aapke hain Kaun (1994)

Movie: This song appeared in 1994 Rajshri Productions’ super hit musical rom-com Hum Aapke Hain Kaun (Who am I to you?) directed by Sooraj Barjatiya. The movie starred Salman Khan, Madhuri Dixit, Mohnish Bahl, Renuka Shahane, Alok Nath, Anupam Kher, late Reema Lagoo, Satish Shah, Himani Shivpuri, Sahila Chadha, etc.
Prem (Salman Khan) and Rajesh (Mohnish Bahl) live with their uncle Kailashnath (Alok Nath), post their parents’ death. Rajesh is in charge of the family business and his family is searching for a bride for him. Kailashnath finds out that Professor Siddharth Chaudhary (Anupam Kher) and his wife (Reema Lagoo) have an eligible daughter Pooja (Renuka Shahane). Pooja has a younger sister Nisha (Madhuri Dixit). Rajesh and Pooja like each other from the first glance, one of the reasons is that both are painters. Both the families arrange Rajesh and Pooja’s marriage. Since the beginning, Nisha and Prem keep bickering light-heartedly with each other.
Rajesh and Pooja’s engagement is announced and the wedding also gets over. Pooja mingles with Rajesh’s family very easily and becomes a part of the family in no time. Soon, she gets pregnant and the next traditional ritual of godbharayi comes up. The Professor and his wife cannot attend because of postponed exams in his college. Nisha is sent instead. Prem comes to pick her up. They fall in love with each other. Rajesh has to go abroad for finalizing a business deal. Prem gets busy with his work in Mumbai. Pooja gives birth to a boy and her parents come to visit them. After the visit, they return home with Nisha.
One day, Pooja and Prem visit her maiden home where she gets to know that Prem and Nisha love each other. She sings this song, at this time.
Song: The lyrics of this song were written by Ravindra Rawal and the music was scored by Raam-Lakshman.
The gist of the song is, the man’s sister-in-law is taking a mock marriage procession to marry the man to her own sister. Some part of the song is a take-off from Wah wah Ramji…
Video: Cinematography is by Rajan Kinagi. Dance has been choreographed by late Jay Borade.
The video opens with Renuka Shahane holding Salman Khan’s hand. She begins to dance with him. Salman Khan has the baby in its bag attached to his torso. The pomeranian is playing with a ball. The dance steps are very close to those performed in Maharashtrian folk dances. This is perhaps because Renuka Shahane herself is a Maharashtrian in real life.
Madhuri Dixit is leaning on the door of her room from the inside. She is blushing. Salman Khan and Renuka Shahane have climbed up the staircase. Renuka Shahane takes the baby from him and places it in a pram to take it toward Madhuri Dixit’s room. They enter Madhuri Dixit’s room and continue singing and dancing. Madhuri Dixit is still blushing and tries to go out.
Salman Khan stops her and makes her turn to look at Renuka Shahane. All the 3 together perform a few dance steps. The music peters out and Renuka Shahane makes Madhuri Dixit sit on the stool in front of the dresser. The video ends as Salman Khan places Renuka Shahane’s necklace on Madhuri Dixit’s neck as the sign of the auspicious bond between the lead pair.
Artists: The playback of this song was sung by Lata Mangeshkar and S P Balasubramanium and the onscreen performances are by Salman Khan, Mohnish Bahl, Renuka Shahane, Alok Nath, Madhuri Dixit, Himani Shivpuri and others.
Cultural Influence: This is a typically filmi song celebrating the marriage of the hero and the heroine in advance. The song and the artists are good. The video is watchable for the same.
