Movie: This song appears in the 1961 AVM Productions’ family drama Chhaya (Shadow), produced by A V Meiyappan and directed by the legendary Hrishikesh Mukherjee. The star-cast included late Sunil Dutt, Asha Parekh, late Nirupa Roy, late Nazir Hussain, late Lalita Pawar and Mohan Choti.
Manorama (Nirupa Roy) goes to Lucknow with her infant daughter after her husband’s death, searching for her maternal uncle. Then, she finds that her uncle had sold the house and expired. At that time, she does not know what to do and has nowhere to go.
Her daughter becomes sick because of the lack of nutritious food and shelter. Desperately, since she does not have any other alternative, she leaves the baby at the entrance of a wealthy man Seth Jagatnarayan’s (Nazir Hussain) house. Having no children Jagatnarayan adopts her and calls her Sarita. Manorama comes to the man’s home after a few days and gets the job of her own daughter’s nanny.
Jagatnarayan decides to go to Bombay (Mumbai now) to start a new life and hide the fact that Sarita was an adopted child. Manorama accompanies them to the new city. There they are joined by his cousin sister (Lalita Pawar) and naïve son Lali (Mohan Choti).
Sarita grows up and becomes a carefree, beautiful and intelligent young girl under the care of her father and nanny. A poor young man, Arun (Sunil Dutt) is appointed as a tutor for Sarita. Sarita is a fan of the poet Rahee, which is actually the pen name of Arun. Sarita wants to meet her idol and tries various methods to meet him, which result in failure.
Sarita goes to a movie one day and sees Arun with his sister and misunderstands him. One day, she visits Arun’s home and his sister says that Arun and Rahee are one and the same people. When Arun visits Sarita’s home to teach, she confronts him with the information. They realize that they are in love with each other and they go on a date at this time. It is, now, that they sing this song.
Song: The lyrics of this song were penned by Rajinder Kishan and music was composed by Salil Chaudhury.
The gist of the song is, “Wonder where both of us are going together, bonded through the heart. We are following the love we have for each other wherever it takes us.”
Video: Cinematography is by Jaywant Pathare and T.B. Seetaram. Dance choreography is by A K Chopra-Dandayudapani Pillai.
The video opens with the lead pair looking at each other. The next shot shows many birds flying in one group in the sky. Asha Parekh is shown running toward the sea on the beach. Sunil Dutt is following her slowly. He also begins the song. Asha Parekh replies, continuing the song. She plays with the waves of the sea.
Sunil Dutt follows her more slowly, but not playing with the water. She performs a few dance steps. They travel in a car to a different location. Sunil Dutt chases her all around tall trees. There are another location and dress change. They are now near railway tracks. Soon, the song peters out and the video ends as the lead pair moves away from the place.
Artists: The playback singers are Mukesh and Lata Mangeshkar. Onscreen performances are by Asha Parekh and Sunil Dutt.
Cultural Influence: This filmi romantic song is an affirmation of the hero and the heroine’s love for each other. The song and the artists are very good. The video is watchable for the same.
