Movie: This song appeared in 1963 hit romantic drama Phir Wahi Dil Laya Hoon (I’ve come back with the same heart) produced and directed by Nasir Hussain under the banner of Nasir Hussain Films. The movie starred late Joy Mukherjee, Asha Parekh, late Pran, late Rajinder Nath, etc.
Marital discord increases between Jamuna (Veena) and her husband Colonel Mahendranath and she leaves him. He does not give her their son, so she gets him kidnapped. Mother and son go and live in Srinagar. Mahendranath then brings up Mona, his friend’s daughter as a niece. He wants the now grown up Mona (Asha Parekh) to marry Biharilal alias Difu (Rajinder Nath), who has been to a foreign country and belongs to a wealthy family. Jamuna’s son Mohan (Joy Mukherjee) has also grown up and they have been living in a lower middle class locality. One day Mohan meets Mona and he falls in love with her. Mohan introduces himself as a friend of Difu and convinces her that the man she is betrothed to has mental helath issues. He has already told Difu that Mona has mental health issues.
He also convinces her to take him round the city of Agra. They roam around the city and finally reach the mental hospital where Mona and Difu come face to face and fight it out in fear of each other. Difu runs away and Mohan takes Mona for lunch. They bring a packed lunch to a historical place and after lunch Mohan sings this song.
Song: The music of this song was composed by O P Nayyar and Majrooh Sultanpuri wrote the lyrics.
The gist of the song is, “Decorate flower-buds on your dupatta. Fill your hair with stars. In this way, decorate yourself and remember me in such a similar evening.”
Video: Cinematography is by Marshal Braganza.
The video opens with the sad look on the face of Asha Parekh. She turns to Joy Mukherjee and he begins the song in tune with the music, which has already begun. She has realized that she is in love with him. But, he is betrothed to Rajindernath. So, she is in a jeopardy.
They watch a caravan moving just ahead of the historical place. The ‘historical’ place looks to me like a studio. And other shots have been added while editing. The caravan is actually a marriage procession taking the bride with them in a palanquin. She is sighing sadly. She has tears in her eyes, which he wipes with his hands.
The song ends and the video continues with dialogue between them.
Artists: The playback for this song was sung by Mohammad Rafi and the onscreen performance was by Joy Mukherjee, Asha Parekh and others.
Cultural Influence: This filmi romantic song establishes the love between the hero and the heroine. The song is good and the video is watchable for the song and the artists, again and again.
