Didi tera devar dewaana – Lata/S P – Raam-Lakshman – Madhuri/Salman | Hum Aapke Hain Kaun (1994)

Movie: This song appeared in 1994 Rajshri Productions’ super hit musical rom-com Hum Aapke Hain Kaun (Who am I to you?) directed by Sooraj Barjatiya. The movie starred Salman Khan, Madhuri Dixit, Mohnish Bahl, Renuka Shahane, Alok Nath, Anupam Kher, late Reema Lagoo, Satish Shah, Himani Shivpuri, Sahila Chadha, etc.
Prem (Salman Khan) and Rajesh (Mohnish Bahl) live with their uncle Kailashnath (Alok Nath), post their parents’ death. Rajesh is in charge of the family business and his family is searching for a bride for him. Kailashnath finds out that Professor Siddharth Chaudhary (Anupam Kher) and his wife (Reema Lagoo) have an eligible daughter Pooja (Renuka Shahane). Pooja has a younger sister Nisha (Madhuri Dixit). Rajesh and Pooja like each other from the first glance, one of the reasons is that both are painters. Both the families arrange Rajesh and Pooja’s marriage. Since the beginning, Nisha and Prem keep bickering light-heartedly with each other.
Rajesh and Pooja get married. Pooja mingles with Rajesh’s family very easily and becomes a part of the family in no time. Soon, she gets pregnant and the next traditional ritual of godbharayi comes up. The Professor and his wife cannot attend because of postponed exams in his college. Nisha is sent instead. Prem comes to pick her up. During the ladies only function of godbharayi, Nisha and Prem sing this song.
Song: The lyrics of this song were written by Dev Kohli and the music was scored by Raam-Lakshman. This is another song, the popularity of which, Lata Mangeshkar was not confident of. Again, the director and the music director convinced her and the result is in front of us.
The gist of the song is, “Dear Elder Sister, your brother-in-law is crazy. Oh God, he keeps flirting with girls. This is his job since a long time. Oh God, he keeps flirting with girls.”
Video: Cinematography is by Rajan Kinagi. Dance has been choreographed by late Jay Borade.
The video opens with Salman Khan making himself comfortable in the kitchen to watch the function. Actually, this is a ladies only function and men are banned. But, he makes it a point to watch it stealthily. As the music begins, Madhuri Dixit begins the dance with other girls. Sahila Chadha wears the same suit as Salman Khan is currently wearing.
Salman Khan is shocked. Sahila Chadha picks up Bindu and moves around a bit. Sahila Chadha is enacting the entire behavior of Salman Khan. Sahila Chadha kisses the cheek of Himani Shivpuri. Madhuri Dixit is watching the act of Sahila Chadha and begins the song. Shahila Chadha uses a flower in a catapult to hit Madhuri Dixit’s back. They continue to dance.
Salman Khan is still watching as he eats a burger. Renuka Shahane is also enjoying the song-and-dance sequence. Lakshmikant Berde and Dilip Joshi debate on whether to join Salman Khan or not. Ajit Vachani turns a blind eye to their entering the kitchen via a window. Madhuri Dixit appears from behind a curtain all loaded up like a pregnant woman.
Everybody laughs at it. The 3 hidden men also enjoy it. Salman Khan is so shocked that he almost swoons. Madhuri Dixit is singing about her ‘husband’ bringing stuff that is different from what she had asked. She even hits Sahila Chadha’s head with a musk melon. Of course, they do not show the actual hitting.
Sahila Chadha licks at the liquid flowing from the broken melon on her head. I find this so disgusting. This girl is wearing a wig. I have seen these filmi wigs, which might be so dirty and even have lice in them. Eeks! I feel like I will throw up. Poor girl! She is even made to eat up from the broken piece.
Priya Arun, playing the maid Chameli in the movie, catches the 3 men watching the program and holds Lakshmikant Berde’s ear. He runs away and Salman Khan tries to hug Priya Arun. Salman Khan hits Madhuri Dixit with a flower via a catapult. Now, these things are okay between ladies. But, a man doing this to a girl, whom he has not yet married is inappropriate.
Everybody is shocked that Salman Khan did it. All the other girls with Sahila Chadha leading them, chase the men away. Salman Khan gets away and jumps to catch the chandelier. He begins to sing as he holds on to it. The ladies get worried he might fall down and hurt himself. Madhuri Dixit is silenced due to his presence.
He jumps down and all the ladies want to greet him with their footwear. He hits Sahila Chadha’s back repeatedly for imitating him. Next is the turn of Madhuri Dixit. She pleads to him. Then, she covers her face expecting some trashing. But, when that does not come, she looks at him. He is on his knees expecting a punishment for playing pranks with them.
Madhuri Dixit is blushing. The group of ladies decide the punishment. Salman Khan is made to wear a strapy gown and made up like a pregnant woman! The song and the video end there.
Artists: The playback of this song was sung by Lata Mangeshkar and S P Balasubramanium and the onscreen performances are by Salman Khan, Renuka Shahane, Madhuri Dixit, Sahila Chadha, Bindu, Himani Shivpuri, Lakshmikant Berde, Dilip Joshi, Ajit Vachani, Priya Arun and others.
Cultural Influence: This is a typically filmi song celebrating the pregnancy of the heroine’s sister. The song and the artists are good. The video is watchable for the same.
