Chal ri Sajni ab kya soche – Mukesh – S D Burman | Bambai Ka Babu (1960)

Movie: This song appears in the 1960 Naya Films’ thriller Bombay Ka Babu (Gentleman from Bombay, Babu is also a name here) directed by Raj Khosla and produced by Raj Khosla and Jal Mistry. The star-cast included late Dev Anand, late Suchitra Sen, late Jeevan, late Nazir Hussain, late Dhumal, late Achala Sachdev, late Jagdish Raj and late Tun Tun.
Babu (Dev Anand) is running away from Bombay (Mumbai now) police for a murder he did for self-defense. He goes to various cities like Delhi, but he is chased by the authorities at every place. Finally, he lands in Joginder Nagar and meets Bhagat (Rashid Khan). Bhagat blackmails him into impersonating Kundan, the long lost son of Dhalpur’s Zamindar Shahji (Nazir Hussain). The underlying intention for the impersonation is eventually stealing the Zamindar’s money.
Babu sends Kundan’s father a letter saying that he would be returning home. Babu is accepted by the family the moment he says that he is Kundan. Every time Bhagat wants some money, Babu has to ask the Zamindar for pocket money. The Zamindar refuses initially and immediately relents. The Zamindar’s daughter Maya (Suchitra Sen) asks several pointed questions about his past. But, Babu avoids to reply and tells her that he would rather she did not ask something he wanted to forget.
The affection showered by the Zamindar’s wife Rukmani (Achala Sachdev) makes Babu regret his despicable mission. He also falls in love with Maya, who thinks that he is her brother. Soon, Maya finds out about Babu’s real intent in coming to their home. She also realizes that he is being pressurized by Bhagat and that Babu had fallen in love with her. She goes home, thinking she will tell her parents about him. But, when she hears about how much love and trust her parents had placed on Babu, their Kundan, she stops short.
On the eve of Maya’s wedding, Babu realizes that he had killed the scion of this family. Bhagat loots the Zamindar’s house despite no support from Babu. Babu follows them in spite of being beaten up black and blue. Maya gets to know about the theft and she also tries to stop him. But, Babu takes his responsibility seriously and brings back the money and jewelry from the goons. The wedding takes place as planned. His inspector friend (Manohar Deepak) also tells him that because Babu regrets his crime, his friend is ready to ignore the fact that he was a murder and had been caught. It is at this time that this song is heard in the background.
Song: The lyrics of this song were penned by late Majrooh Sultanpuri and the music was composed by Sachin Dev Burman.
This is a typical filmi bidai song telling the heroine that she had better leave now and stop crying, which might stain the kohl around her eyes.
Video: Cinematography is by Jal Mistry.
The video opens with Dev Anand standing aloof from the wedding celebrations. The next shot is of Suchitra Sen’s flawless face, all decked up as a bride. The wedding rituals have just got over and everybody stands up. Suchitra Sen’s parents and Dev Anand are sad. This song begins in the background and Suchitra Sen turns back on her tracks.
Suchitra Sen comes back to Nazir Hussain to fall at his feet. Achala Sachdev blindly runs toward Suchitra Sen to hug the bride. Dev Anand comes forward to take her to the decorated horse carriage to gently help her get into it. There are a few dialogues exchanged between them.
The music resumes. Manohar Deepak goes with Dev Anand till the threshold of the house and stops there. Dev Anand goes further into the house and the sign of The End appears on the screen. There is a lot of symbolism in the song. The main message that the song gives is that Dev Anand accepts his position as the scion of the family.
Artists: The playback singers are Mukesh and onscreen performers are Suchitra Sen, Dev Anand, Suchitra Sen, Nazir Hussain, Achala Sachdev, Manohar Deepak and others.
Cultural Influence: This filmi song is a sad bidai song, bidding farewell to the wedded heroine. The song and the artists are good. The video is watchable for the same.
