Movie: This song appeared in 1994 Rajshri Productions’ super hit musical rom-com Hum Aapke Hain Kaun (Who am I to you?) directed by Sooraj Barjatiya. The movie starred Salman Khan, Madhuri Dixit, Mohnish Bahl, Renuka Shahane, Alok Nath, Anupam Kher, late Reema Lagoo, Satish Shah, Himani Shivpuri, Sahila Chadha, etc.
Prem (Salman Khan) and Rajesh (Mohnish Bahl) live with their uncle Kailashnath (Alok Nath), post their parents’ death. Rajesh is in charge of the family business and his family is searching for a bride for him. Kailashnath finds out that Professor Siddharth Chaudhary (Anupam Kher) and his wife (Reema Lagoo) have an eligible daughter Pooja (Renuka Shahane). Pooja has a younger sister Nisha (Madhuri Dixit). Rajesh and Pooja like each other from the first glance, one of the reasons is that both are painters. Both the families arrange Rajesh and Pooja’s marriage. Since the beginning, Nisha and Prem keep bickering light-heartedly with each other.
Rajesh and Pooja’s engagement is announced and the wedding day dawns. There is a ritual in North Indian weddings of the bride’s sister hiding the shoes of the groom. Nisha and Prem fight for the shoes and Prem gives away the chance to keep the shoes in his custody. After taking money from Kailashnath, Nisha herself places the shoes at the feet of the groom. The song on shoes immediately precedes the bidai or the farewell song. They have not shown the rituals of the wedding proper.
Song: The lyrics of this song were written by Ravindra Rawal and the music was scored by Raam-Lakshman.
The gist of the song is, “Whatever my father, you had taught me and given me, I am taking them with me to my new house, my beloved’s home. Waves of memory flash in front of me. Your beloved daughter is going to her new house.”
Video: Cinematography is by Rajan Kinagi.
The video opens with Madhuri Dixit placing the groom’s shoes in front of Mohnish Bahl. She wipes the shoes with her own dupatta before that. Renuka Shahane is looking down to cry because it is farewell time. Reema Lagoo and Madhuri Dixit are also crying.
Madhuri Dixit brings some puffed rice to the bride so that she can throw it behind her. This is a ritual in North India and is part of the bidai or farewell of the bride. Anupam Kher is also sad. Alok Nath, Laksmikant Berde, Satish Shah, Ajit Vachani and Salman Khan look on.
Renuka Shahane hugs Reema Lagoo. When the wedded couple prostrate in front of the idol of Lord Krishna and Mohnish Bahl gets up, Renuka Shahane is overcome with grief and continues to be in the sitting position.
Anupam Kher makes her stand up and he takes both the bride and the groom toward the gate. Madhuri Dixit also hugs Renuka Shahane from behind her. Some men spread rose petals on the path from the door to the car. Renuka Shahane has tears in her eyes.
The bride and the groom sit in the car. The groom’s family say farewell to the bride’s family. Salman Khan says his apology to Madhuri Dixit as dialogue. The video ends as Madhuri Dixit keeps looking at Salman Khan as he leaves in a car.
Artists: The playback of this song was sung by Sharda Sinha and the onscreen performances are by Salman Khan, Madhuri Dixit, Mohnish Bahl, Renuka Shahane, Alok Nath, Anupam Kher, Reema Lagoo, Satish Shah, Ajit Vachani and others.
Cultural Influence: This is a typically filmi song taking the traditional wedding rituals further. It is bidai time and the groom and the bride’s families take leave of each other. The song and the artists are good. The video is watchable for the same.
