Technically, the definition of “badass” is someone who is tough and uncompromising. In the world of Rock ‘n’ Roll, badassery is more often than not the key to a successful rocker! By this I mean that Rock ‘n’ Roll is a music that is truly the epitome of outcast. The best music that had nowhere else to go is often identified as Rock! This makes for a lot of very particular and judgmental fans, and it takes a special kind of person to create in spite of negativity – especially as a woman, unfortunately! Thus being said, here are the top ten women (in my opinion) who are total badasses in this big bad world of Rock ‘n’ Roll.
Top Ten Badass Female Rockers
1. Stevie Nicks
Stevie Nicks is still going strong at 60! The gypsy queen of rock is best known for her work in Fleetwood Mac, as well as her impressive solo career! From classics such as “Landslide,” “Crystal,” and “Belladonna” to her newest version of “Gyspy,” Nicks’ voice continues to ring in our ears even once the song has ended – and we certainly aren’t complaining!
2. Hayley Williams
Recently Hayley Williams has come face to face with some heavy judgement from longtime Paramore fans regarding the band’s newest album “After Laughter.” She has taken this negative judgement and used it to fuel her artistic drive and that is the very definition of badassery! Best known for her earlier years as the punk rock frontwoman of “Paramore,” this rock and roll babe has accomplished much since the beginning of her career – and she doesn’t care who hates it!
3. Pat Benatar
Heart breaker, dream maker, love taker don’t you mess around with this woman! Pat Benatar has successfully branded her name in the history of Rock as one totally badass lady who knows how to write – and sing – a really good song! You have heard at least one of her songs, guaranteed!
4. Debbie Harry (Blondie)
A punk pioneer that we are all thankful for, Debbie Harry has rocked her way into all of our hearts via the all-mighty band Blondie. Just look at that look of fierceness – confidence and toughness just radiates from her very being! Not to mention the lyrics in her music!
5. Amy Lee
Amy Lee is the queen of blending the most elegantly classic vocals with totally metal instrumentals, and it just works! A beautiful tone mixed with rigid guitar riffs has never before sounded as beautiful as Amy Lee allows it to be via Evanescence.
“If people are making fun of you, you’re probably doing something right.”
6. Gwen Stefani (No Doubt Years)
Bombshell Gwen Stefani is the co-founder and lead singer of the totally ska and punk rock band No Doubt. The singer and the band both experienced success after their breakthrough studio album “Tragic Kingdom,” and you can still hear the chorus of “I’m Just a Girl” playing in the back of your head! No Doubt’s brilliant and honest lyrics matched with fast-paced musical excellence earned Stefani her rightful place on this list of badass female rockers.
Pink (Alecia Beth Moore) is a mother, the epitome of sexy, and an absolute warrior. She fights for what is universally right and empowers women of all kinds along the way. From badass instant classics such as “Get This Party Started,” “So What,” and plenty more, the singer was always destined for long-term success and will always have a special place in the world of music.
“‘Sexy’ doesn’t have to come with the price of being dumb.”
8. Joan Jett
She loves rock and roll, and she’s not afraid to scream it from the mountaintops! Joan Jett paved the way for so many of today’s female rockers to be able to do what they love and be successful at it.
9. Amy Winehouse
Rest in bliss you Rockabilly icon, you! Amy Winehouse was a powerhouse that was taken from us far too soon. The English singer brought something all her own to the jazzy blues genre and for that we are forever grateful. Winehouse’s endless confidence and artistic brilliance makes her stand out amongst her musical peers, and always will.
Winehouse died of alcohol poisoning on 23 July 2011. She was only 27-years-old.
10. Joni Mitchell
Joni Mitchel creates the river for all of her fans to “skate away on” (Song reference – River). Her music gives us wings, it digs into our souls and releases an untouched magic in each and every one of us. If you haven’t listened to her album “Blue,” then there’s a beauty about this life that you have not yet experienced.
I know there are a ton of women who have earned their way to the top in the world of Rock that have been left off of this list. So who are some of your favorites or inspirations that were not mentioned? Comment below!
