“You know I’m back, like I never left” Ben Haggerty, a.k.a. Macklemore, proudly raps in the first line of his new single “Glorious.” Since blowing up with the hit single “Thrift Shop” in 2012, Macklemore has been praised for the strong socially conscious messages in his music.
Despite his success, Macklemore had been keeping a low profile following the birth of his daughter, Sloane, in 2015. He recently announced his return with “Glorious” in a lengthy Instagram caption explaining his absence from the music scene: “I wanted to be around Sloane and Tricia as much as possible. I wanted to make an album and raise my baby girl.” Judging by his Instagram stories, it’s no wonder he wants to spend as much time as he can with his adorable daughter.
Another surprising revelation from the post was his decision to part ways with his collaborator Ryan Lewis. He reveals: “After the last tour, Ryan and I agreed that some creative space would be good for the both of us.” They were an unstoppable duo for nine years, but Macklemore makes it clear that they parted on good terms. He also hints that Lewis is collaborating with other artists, one of which we now know is Kesha. You can read more about Lewis’s involvement in her powerful new single, “Praying,” here.
Although we’ll miss the dynamic duo, Macklemore’s passion for his craft is obvious in this track. Featuring the elegant vocals of Skylar Grey in the chorus, Macklemore celebrates his successful career and his newfound confidence in his music. Grey acts as the voice inside his head, repeating the mantra: “I feel glorious, glorious/Got a chance to start again/I was born for this, born for this/It’s who I am, how could I forget?” He’s affirming his musical ability, expelling any doubts about his decision to go solo.
Macklemore may feel glorious but nothing is as glorious as his 100-year-old grandmother. She is undoubtedly the star of his music video.
The opening scene indicates that Macklemore flew to California for his Grandma Helen’s 100th birthday to surprise her. After surprising her, he sits down and tells her “today we are going to do whatever you want to do.” In the most Grandma way possible, she says, “Oh, God, I want to do it all!”
And what a glorious adventure they have! Cruising around in a vintage convertible, from shoe shopping to thrift shopping, they do it all. This video will have you wishing you could take your grandma out to egg some houses and scurry away with her walker. At the very least, it’s a reminder to give your grandparents a call and tell them how awesome they are.
We often forget how incredible our grandparents are– the things they have seen, the adventures they have had, and the amount of change they have witnessed over time. Helen’s spirit shines through in this marvelous tribute to an incredible life.
Macklemore has a special knack for reminding us to appreciate the important things in life, big or small. Family and love are the strongest themes in his music, and “Glorious” is no exception. If he doesn’t win a Grammy, he should at least win for “Grandson of the Year.”
