Suraj ki bahon mein – Dominique/Clinton/ Loy – Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy | Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara (2011)

Movie: This song appeared in 2011 Excel Entertainment’s comic drama Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara (You have got One Life) produced by Farhaan Akhtar and Ritesh Sidhwani and directed by Zoya Akhtar. The movie starred Hritik Roshan, Abhay Deol, Farhaan Akhtar, Katrina Kaif, Kalki Koechlin, Ariadna Cabrol, Naseeruddin Shah, etc.

Arjun (Hritik Roshan), Kabir (Abhay Deol) and Imraan (Farhaan Akhtar) are inseparable friends. They plan a trip to Spain where each of the friends chooses a dangerous sport for the group to take part in. Their first sports event is scuba diving and their instructor is Laila (Katrina Kaif). Post a session of scuba diving and a brief halt in Bunol for the La Tomatina festival, Arjun and Laila come closer to each other. Imraan is attracted to Laila’s friend (Ariadna Cabrol).

When the friends take on a further journey toward their second destination, Laila follows them on a bike and catches up with them. Arjun and Laila have realized that they are attracted to each other and soon after she leaves, the 3 friends get into trouble due to one of their practical jokes and Imraan’s biological father (Naseeruddin Shah) bails them out. Imraan has a saddening conversation with him and realizes that his father did not want to take his son’s responsibility and the same thing was true of now.

In the meantime, Kabir has an altercation with his now possessive fiancé Natasha (Kalki Koechlin) and blurts out to his friends that he had no intention of proposing when he did. The last sport that they are to participate in is Running with the Bulls! Just before the actual ‘running’, the 3 friends promise each other that they would do certain things that were crucial to their lives if they survive. They do survive. The movie ends abruptly. I felt this abruptness in Zoya’s more recent movie Dil Dhadakne Do as well. This song appears at the end of Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara when the titles are shown again. All the main characters of the movie are shown in the song.

Song: The music of this song was composed by Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy and the lyrics were penned by Javed Akhtar.

The gist of the song is, “My life is in the arms of the sun. My breath has the sun rays and light is emitted by my speech. My heart beats have changed. An idea came to me just like that. We have one life. Let’s openly love it.”

Video: Cinematography is by Carlos Catalan. Dance choreography is by Vaibhavi Merchant-Bosco-Caesar.

The video opens with several shots of the décor used in the garden event. The song has already begun in the background. Abhay Deol gestures Kalki Koechlin to approach him. Farhaan Akhtar enters the venue and suddenly begins to dance. Hritik Roshan also appears from nowhere and begins to dance. Abhay Deol joins them in the dance.

Katrina Kaif also appears and approaches the 3 friends as she performs a few dance steps. Each of the actors performs different dance steps with their own partner. The titles begin on the right side with the video screen becoming smaller and shifting to the left. Ariadna Cabrol is already present there and dances with Farhaan Akhtar.

The others present there also join them in the dance. Hritik Roshan and Katrina Kaif exchange rings to get married. But, Kalki Koechlin has found someone else and Abhay Deol congratulates both. Abhay Deol becomes their official photographer. The song ends abruptly and the 3 friends, Katrina Kaif, Ariadna Cabrol and Kalki Koechlin pose for a picture. The video also ends there.

Artists: The playback of this song was sung by Dominique Cerejo, Clinton Cerejo and Loy Mendonsa and the onscreen performances are by Hritik Roshan, Abhay Deol, Farhaan Akhtar, Katrina Kaif, Kalki Koechlin and others.

Cultural Influence: There is a distinct Catholic influence on this typically filmi song, which is shown not just by the venue and the décor. The song and the artists are good. The video is watchable for the same.
