Yeah, I know, my jaw dropped too. The spunky singer just revealed that once, in 2015, she briefly left the band to deal with her depression and exhaustion – something that is just as understandable as it is shocking.

“For the first time in my life, there wasn’t a pinhole of light at the end of the tunnel..”

-Hayley Williams on briefly leaving Paramore

The colorful queen of Punk recently revealed in a new cover story for “Fader” that there was a lot of pain and indescribable hopelessness that lead up to her deciding to leave the band.

Williams stated that she would spend days upon days in bed, and had consistent thoughts on the topic of death. Eventually – and thankfully – she began to see a therapist regarding this newfound depression that was slowly consuming her.

Ironically, the one thing that drained Williams of any and all energy is also the one thing that could successfully pull her out of this hopelessness – music. Her band mates would send her unfinished music to try to keep her mind occupied.

“..I don’t think I understood how dangerous hopelessness is. Everything hurts.”

-Hayley Williams on briefly leaving Paramore

Think back to the first time you listened to Paramore’s newest album “After Laughter” – did you actually hear the lyrics? Particularly – or at least most noticeably – in “Hard Times” you can really hear the truth and the depth of Hayley’s hopelessness dripping from each lyric. Yet, the song is enticingly upbeat and colorful! This beautifully artistic contrast does an excellent job of portraying each extreme. Williams is normally very joyful – hence the colors and the bounciness of the music. However, the depth in which this hopelessness resides within the singer is creating some seriously Hard Times.

Hayley Williams is notorious for being this upbeat, eclectic rocker. She is known for her consistently peppy and exciting stage presence, her distinctive voice, etc. Though, we have to remember that she is also human, and can burn out if pushed too hard for too long. Ultimately, we’re all thankful that she has decided to continue on with Paramore, though her brief leave was undoubtedly understood.
