Movie: This song appears in the 1956 crime thriller CID directed by Raj Khosla and produced by Guru Dutt. It starred late Dev Anand, Shakila, late K N Singh, late Johnny Walker, Kum Kum, late Mahmood and Waheeda Rehman (debut). Mahmood, a comedian in later life, played a serious role in this movie, which is one of his earlier ones.
Shrivastav is the editor of a newspaper and is about to expose the nefarious activities of a wealthy and influential man. He requests his friend Inspector Shekhar (Dev Anand) to meet him so that he could tell him about the threat he keeps receiving from the underworld. Shrivastava is killed before Shekhar arrives at the newspaper office. Shekhar suddenly remembers that he had seen the suspicious man in the elevator, while he was on the way to the editor’s office. When Shekhar reaches the streets, the man has already got into a car and left.
To follow the man, Shekhar borrows a woman’s (Shakila) car despite her protests. Though Shekhar explains to her the reason behind his borrowing the car, she throws a fit and even throws the car keys in the mud, while it is raining outside. As a result, they lose the chase. Overnight, Shekhar sleeps on the front seat and the woman in the back seat. When morning comes and they wake up, a villager (Minoo Mumtaz) and her friends come that way, for the purpose of taking drinking water from the nearby water source. The villager sings this song at this moment.
Song: The lyrics were penned by Majrooh Sultanpuri and the music was composed by O P Nayyar.
The gist of the song is, “Solve the puzzle of my name. My village is near the river. The courtyard of my house is shaded by a pipal tree.”
Video: Cinematography is by late V K Murthy and late Anwar. Dance choreography is by late Zohra Sehgal.
The video opens with some girls moving across the focus of the camera. They begin swaying in tune with the music, which has already begun. Dev Anand and Shakila, sitting inside the car, are watching the performance. Minoo Mumtaz stands up in front of the camera and immediately moves toward the left of the screen beginning the song, near the car.
The other girls throw their metal pots into the water and jump into it. They play with water. Minoo Mumtaz performs a few dance steps. But otherwise, she keeps moving with the camera in tune with the music of the song. The lead pair comes out of the car for a better look. Shakila, by chance looks at Dev Anand, who is looking at her and gets irritated.
The song peters out and the video ends as Shakila picks up the keys and drives off in the car, leaving Dev Anand shocked.
Artists: The playback singers are Shamshad Begum and onscreen performances are by Minoo Mumtaz, Dev Anand, Shakila and others.
Cultural Influence: This typically O P Nayyar style filmi song can be called the item song of yore on folk beats because the girl performing it comes in the movie only for this sequence. The song and the artists are fantastic and the video is watchable for the same.
