Movie: This song has been placed in the M. A. Nadiadwala produced A K Movies’ hit movie Yaarana (Friendship) released in 1981. It is a musical drama and directed by Rakesh Kumar. The movie stars Amitabh Bachchan, late Amjad Khan, Neetu Singh, Tanuja and Kader Khan.
Kishan and Bishan are good friends since childhood. Kishan is an orphan, though self-sufficient and a hard-worker. On the other hand, Bishan was born with a silver spoon in his mouth. Bishan’s uncle (Jeevan) has an eye on his widowed sister’s wealth and does not like Kishan and Bishan’s friendship. The man manipulates his sister to send Bishan first to the city and then abroad for his education.
The 2 friends reunite many years later and Bishan (Amjad Khan) discovers that Kishan (Amitabh Bachchan) sings well. Bishan now has a successful business and wants to sponsor Kishan’s musical studies. Kishan goes to the city and Bishan requests Komal (Neetu Singh) to groom Kishan into a performer and a gentleman. Kishan is not interested in developing his talent and tries to get debarred from the classes by being a disobedient troublemaker with hilarious consequences.
Meanwhile, Bishan discovers that the family wealth has been continuously looted over the past 18 years by his uncle and his son (Ranjeet). Bishan is then compelled to borrow money by mortgaging his remaining property to support Kishan’s musical education. This results in a major rift between Bishan and his wife (Tanuja), who thinks that Kishan would turn his back on her husband once he succeeds as a singer.
Kishan finds out Bishan’s financial condition and at that time he decides that he does not want the singing career, which has almost brought his friend to the streets. Now, Komal argues with him that his friend and her efforts would go into the drain if he would not continue with his career. She even blurts out in frustration has she has fallen in love with him.
This is the time when Kishan realizes his duties towards Bishan and Komal and placates her with a song – Chookar mere man ko…. This song Sara zamana… is shown immediately after Chookar mere man ko…
Song: The music has been composed by Rajesh Roshan and the lyrics have been written by Anjaan.
The gist of the song is, “The entire world is crazy about girls. Then, why do they say that it is wrong to fall in love.”
Video: Cinematography is by Peter Pareira. Dance choreography is by Kamal.
The video opens with Amitabh Bachchan walking through the lobby of the auditorium where the performance is about to happen. Several male and female dancers are already performing in the performance area. Even Neetu Singh is trying a few steps. The leading pair performs together and Amitabh Bachchan begins the song.
Amitabh Bachchan has evolved a distinct style for himself. But, he like Rajnikanth has always been given very simple steps. Thanks to him even the other dancers are compelled to perform simple steps. Often in between, he performs with a guitar in hand. When there is a change of dress, he wears a suit lighted with bulbs. God knows where Neetu Singh has disappeared.
Once the Big B had mentioned in an interview that he had not danced in this sequence, but, had just reacted to the shocks that he received from the electric wires lining the inner side of the suit. In those times, there was no other alternative to electricity for such performances. The blinking lights on his suit add to the whole beautiful ambiance of the performance.
The song peters out and the video ends there.
Artists: Kishore Kumar sings playback, while Amitabh Bachchan lip-synchs. Amjad Khan and Kader Khan look on.
Cultural Influence: This typically filmi song is a disco song by the hero. The song and the artists are good. The video is watchable for the same.
