This song is close to my heart and reminds me of my childhood when I had seen the movie for the first time. Legendary Rafi Sahab and fantastic actor Amjad Khan come together to give this beautiful song. I have always felt as if the artists have performed this song for me. I am so crazy about this song. 🙂
Movie: This song has been placed in the M. A. Nadiadwala produced A K Movies’ hit movie Yaarana (Friendship) released in 1981. It is a musical drama and directed by Rakesh Kumar. The movie stars late Amjad Khan, Amitabh Bachchan, Neetu Singh, Tanuja and Kader Khan.
Kishan and Bishan are good friends since childhood. Kishan is an orphan, though self-sufficient and a hard-worker. On the other hand, Bishan is rich. Bishan’s maternal uncle (Jeevan) has an eye on his widowed sister’s wealth and does not like Kishan and Bishan’s friendship. The man manipulates his sister to send Bishan first to the city and then abroad for his education.
The 2 friends reunite many years later and Bishan (Amjad Khan) discovers that Kishan (Amitabh Bachchan) sings well. Bishan now has a successful business and wants to sponsor Kishan’s musical studies. Kishan goes to the city to be groomed into a performer and gentleman by Komal (Neetu Singh) under the instructions of Bishan. Kishan is not interested in developing his talent and tries to get debarred from the classes by being a disobedient troublemaker with hilarious consequences.
Meanwhile, Bishan discovers that the family wealth has been systematically looted over the years by his uncle and his son (Ranjeet). Bishan is then compelled to borrow money by mortgaging his remaining property to support Kishan’s musical education. This results in a major rift between Bishan and his wife (Tanuja), who thinks that Kishan would turn his back on her husband once he succeeds as a singer.
Kishan finds out Bishan’s financial condition and at that time he decides that he does not want the singing career, which has almost brought his friend to the streets. Now, Komal argues with him that his friend and her efforts would go into the drain if he would not continue with his career. She even blurts out in frustration has she has fallen in love with him. Kishan realizes his duties towards Bishan and Komal and placates her.
Kishan’s first public performance itself is a super duper hit, which makes Bishan very happy. Bishan joins as the captain of a passenger ship where some little kids are also traveling. The kids ask Bishan to sing a song. Bishan first tells them politely that the singer is not him but his friend. But, when they insist, he sings this song.
Song: The music has been composed by Rajesh Roshan and the lyrics have been written by Anjaan.
The kids request the man, “Bishan Uncle, please sing something.” The man says, “I will sing such a song, swaying with happiness that the whole world will sway with me.”
Video: Cinematography is by Peter Pareira. Dance choreography is by Kamal.
The video opens with the visual of Amjad Khan being surrounded by the kids. The kids begin the song. Ranjeet is present there disguised and his goons are getting ready to take over the ship. 4 crew members are also swaying to the tune. The kids follow Amjad Khan to an upper deck. Farida Jalal, who is with the kids, comes out of her cabin, wondering what is going on.
Amjad Khan makes them sit on a ledge in one of the passages of the ship and just leaves whistling. He wants to get back to his work as the captain. Farida Jalal comes there still wondering. The kids get down and run behind Amjad Khan. As Amjad Khan comes out onto the deck, he perceives the kids standing on one of the lifeboats. He continues the song.
The song, soon, peters out and the video ends as Amjad Khan sneaks out of the deck back to his work.
Artists: Mohammad Rafi sings playback, while Amjad Khan, Farida Jalal and some kids perform onscreen.
Cultural Influence: This is a typical filmi song for children rendered very well by Mohammad Rafi Sahab and performed beautifully by Amjad Khan despite his weight. The video is watchable for the above.
