Movie: This song has been placed in the M. A. Nadiadwala produced A K Movies’ hit movie Yaarana (Friendship) released in 1981. It is a musical drama and directed by Rakesh Kumar. The movie stars Amitabh Bachchan, late Amjad Khan, Neetu Singh, Tanuja and Kader Khan.
Kishan and Bishan are good friends since childhood. Kishan is an orphan, though self-sufficient and a hard-worker. On the other hand, Bishan was born with a silver spoon in his mouth. Bishan’s uncle (Jeevan) has an eye on his widowed sister’s wealth and does not like Kishan and Bishan’s friendship. The man manipulates his sister to send Bishan first to the city and then abroad for his education.
When the 2 friends reunite many years later, Bishan (Amjad Khan) discovers that Kishan (Amitabh Bachchan) sings well. Bishan now has a successful business and wants to sponsor Kishan’s musical studies. Bishan acts as if he is upset with his friend and records the song his friend sings. Kishan sings this song at that time.
Song: The music has been composed by Rajesh Roshan and the lyrics have been written by Anjaan.
The gist of this song is that the hero tries to mollify his friend. When he is unable to do that on his own, he requests the help of Lord Shiva.
Video: Cinematography is by Peter Pareira.
The video opens with Amjad Khan and Kader Khan walking briskly with bag and baggage. Amitabh Bachchan is unhappy and has tears in his eyes. The music has already begun. He begins the song in front of the idol of Lord Shiva in a small village temple. Amjad Khan begins to record the song still acting as if he is upset with his friend.
Amitabh Bachchan performs a few dance steps before his friend. But, Amjad Khan moves on. As Amitabh Bachchan continues to sing and dance, Amjad Khan continues to record it, hidden from his friend. What I don’t understand is that without electricity how can one record a song, that too on a tape recorder from such a long distance. You know, what cinematic liberty is all about.
The song and the video end as Amjad Khan comes back to place a gentle hand on his friend’s shoulder.
Artists: Kishore Kumar sings playback while Amitabh Bachchan lip-synchs. Amjad Khan and Kader Khan look on, happily.
Cultural Influence: This filmi song shows the height of friendship, i.e. between 2 men. The only issue about this is that Bollywood is so male-oriented that 2 girls may be friends, but, they don’t sing praises about their friendship. The song and the artists are good. The video is watchable for the same.
