The Punjabi girl Vimmi Saluja (Rani Mukherji) lives in another small village with her parents. She lives to watch movies and study supermodels. She desires to become Miss India. Her parents arrange her marriage with a youth with a decent job. Meanwhile, Rakesh gets an ultimatum to either attend the job interview for which his father has arranged or leave the house.
Rakesh and Vimmi slip out of their homes with their luggage in the middle of the night. They meet each other at a train station and become friends after listening to each other’s stories. They are supportive to each other for their dreams. Vimmi tries to join the Miss India contest. But, she is disqualified after an argument. Rakesh tries to sell his ideas for an investment scheme. But, a businessman rejects his proposal because another man had come first with the idea, which he had stolen from Rakesh.
When Rakesh finds out that the businessman had made money from his idea, he and Vimmi con him and make away with the money, he believes is his. They realize that conning people came easily to them. Thus they decide to take up this profession and reach Mumbai. They find the lifestyle too exciting to give up. They adopt the names of ‘Bunty’ and ‘Babli’ and keep successfully conning different people, looting affluent people disguised as religious priests, business partners, local guides, health inspectors, etc. Their loud activities make them famous and are covered in newspapers. Romance sparks off between them; they marry and continue conning the wealthy as a married couple.
However, Rakesh and Vimmi do not know that ACP Dashrath Singh (Amitabh Bachchan) had caught up with their conning activities and was getting closer by the second. He wants to put them behind bars and for that, he persistently follows them. To increase the complication, Vimmi gives birth to Rakesh’s and her child. Post a very close call from Dashrath, they quit conning for their child’s sake. While they are running away in a goods train, they are caught by the ACP. After they confess to all their crimes, the ACP lets them go. He thinks that he had destroyed Bunty and Babli’s careers permanently as criminals. They go to Rakesh’s parents’ home, who welcome them warmly after missing their son very badly.
But, after 3 years, Dashrath approaches them to ask them to work for the country and thwart the activities of other scammers. The story ends here. This song appears at this time.
