Movie: This song appeared in 1976 Prakash Mehra Productions’ super hit crime comic caper Hera Pheri (Tampering) produced by Satyendra Pal and directed by Prakash Mehra. The movie starred Amitabh Bachchan, Saira Banu, late Vinod Khanna, Sulakshana Pandit, Pinchoo Kapoor, Shree Ram Lagoo, Asrani, Mac Mohan, etc.
Vijay (Amitabh Bachchan) and Ajay (Vinod Khanna) are buddies and con-artists. Together they cheat a restaurant owner and then try their act at a casino. Vijay does some charity work through Ajay, from the money they get by questionable means. Something like a modern Robinhood.
Vijay has a painful past. His father was killed by someone and his mother has lost her senses due to the incident. Their next target is an entire lot of wealthy men hoarding money and not paying income tax. After this heist, a woman (Saira Banu) visits their home giving a sob-story of some men chasing her to rape her. They allow her to stay at their home for the night and the next day she disappears with the booty, leaving an invite for dinner. The next moment, the police are at their door-step. With no sign of the wealth that was stolen from Dhaniram, they are let off.
They visit the woman’s place that night and Vijay goes inside. The woman is Kiran and she strikes a deal with Vijay for business. In the meantime, 2 men kidnap Ajay from where he is standing. Vijay waits overnight and visits Kiran to threaten her with dire consequences if Ajay did not return. Ajay is sleeping at home when Vijay returns and finds that Ajay had been hit on his head. Kiran is also there and reminds Vijay of their commitment.
Ajay is in love with Asha (Sulakshana Pandit). Once when they are on a date at the beach, one of Don PK’s (Pinchoo Kapoor) men Mac (Mac Mohan) listens to them. It turns out that Ajay’s father had sold him to get money for his wife’s treatment. Then, the people, who had bought him, had also died and he had come to the footpath. He had worked hard and studied at night to do his Masters in Arts and Bachelors in Law. His practice failed and he was about to commit suicide when Vijay had saved him. Since then, the 2 were fast buddies.
Asha invites both the men home for dinner. While they are waiting, Asha’s brother Police Commissioner Khanna (Sree Ram Lagoo) enters and throws them out. PK’s goon informs his boss whatever he had eavesdropped. PK realizes that Ajay is his own son and decides to separate Ajay from Vijay because Vijay’s father was killed by PK.
PK frames Vijay in the murder of his informer (Mac Mohan). The man is not actually dead. But, the police arrests Vijay since they do not know the truth. Kiran finds Ajay and takes him to the police station. Asha sees Ajay with Kiran and is hurt that he had ditched her.
PK bails out Vijay as Seth Ghanshyamdas his father’s friend. He also meets Ajay at that time. When PK leaves, he drops a hint about the murder of Vijay’s father, which Vijay had not disclosed to Ajay. Vijay shows Ajay the picture of PK, who had murdered his father. We can see that PK and Ghanshyamdas are one and the same person. But, if the heroes of the movie realize that then how will the movie move forward?
PK meets Asha to convince Ajay that Vijay has told him lies about PK. When Asha does so, Ajay comes to meet PK and gets convinced. Then, Ajay confronts Vijay and they have to break their friendship. Vijay is broken. Kiran tries to be his support. But, she works for PK and the older man wants her to bring Vijay to him so that he can be disposed off easily. Kiran, on the other hand, has fallen in love with Vijay and takes him to her home instead. It is at this time that she sings this song.
Song: The music was scored by Kalyanji-Anandji and the lyrics were penned by Anjaan.
The gist of the song is, “Who does not know the result of love? But, what can I do if my crazy heart does not listen?”
Video: Cinematography is by N Satyan.
The video opens with Saira Banu beginning this song and Amitabh Bachchan looking at her with surprise. He turns around and she hugs his back. The next shot, shows some one loading a pistol with bullets. Vinod Khanna is seen driving a car with some of his father’s goons. The lead pair moves about the hall and the courtyard outside. Then, Saira Banu wear a typical Indian Hindu bridal dress and comes down to the hall. Both sit on a projected seat and the song and the video end there.
Artists: The playback of this song was sung by Lata Mangeshkar and the onscreen performances are by Saira Banu, Amitabh Bachchan, Vinod Khanna and others.
Cultural Influence: This is a typically Bollywood sad but romantic song, which expresses the heroine’s love for the hero. It also says that the love between them in the situation they were in could have disasterous consequences. The song and the artists are good. The video is watchable for the same.
