Sushil Verma (Raaj Kumar) is a surgeon in a hospital. He lives in his quarters on the hospital grounds with his aging mother and younger sister Munni (Kumari Naaz). Sushil’s father died many years ago and he is indebted to his father’s close friend, who paid for his medical education. Sushil’s mother feels that they need to repay the debt in some way.
Nurse Karuna (Meena Kumari) comes to the hospital and assists Dr. Verma during an emergency surgery. Both of them fall for each other but keep their feelings under control.
The nurses go to the beach for a picnic one day. During the trip, Karuna sees Munni (Baby Naaz) injure herself while playing. Karuna takes Munni back to the latter’s house, without knowing that she is going to Dr. Verma’s home or that Munni is his sister. She dresses Munni’s wounds. Then, she does some work at his home, since the normal routine work like cleaning and cooking have not been done there. When Dr. Verma comes out of the bathroom and sees her taking care of his home, he falls even more in love with her.
Things are going smoothly, until the time Dr. Verma’s mother arranges a family trip to Kashmir and convinces him to marry Kusum (Nadira), the daughter of the man who paid for his medical education.
They return home and though Karuna is devastated when she finds out about Dr. Verma’s marriage, she manages to hide the fact. Kusum is a spoilt brat. She throws tantrums at the drop of a hat. She creates a lot of problems for Dr. Verma in his line of duty as a doctor.
Soon, the hospital celebrates the silver jubilee function, where Dr. Verma and Karuna perform a song-and-dance sequence. Kusum does not like it. Kusum’s tantrums increase and she goes to the extent of injuring Munni. Dr. Verma gets frustrated with his wife. One day, one of the in-patients in the hospital gets ill and needs an operation that only Dr. Verma can perform. But, when Karuna calls for him Kusum tells her that he is not in. The couple is actually leaving for the club at that time. At this club, a dancer (Helen) performs this song.
Song: The award-winning music score is by Shankar-Jaikishan and the lyrics penned by Hasrat Jaipuri.
The gist of the song is, “Uff, this gathering is very big. To whom will I give my heart?”
Video: Cinematography is by Josef Wirsching. Dance choreography by Surya Kumar-Satyanarayan-Sohanlal.
The video opens with Helen entering the club’s dance area. The music has already begun and she begins to dance the moment she enters. In the background, some musicians are seen playing some musical instruments. She begins to sing and continues to dance. She approaches a fat old man and pokes at his belly with her finger. He jerks away with mirth on his face.
A male dancer comes along dancing. Helen and the male dancer perform together. Raaj Kumar and Nadira are sitting on a table, watching the performance. They are being served dinner by a waiter. The music, soon, rises to a crescendo and the song and the video end there.
Artists: Asha Bhonsle sings the playback and Helen, Raaj Kumar, Nadira and others have performed onscreen.
Cultural Influence: This typically filmi old timer cabaret and the artists are good. The video is watchable for the same.
