Movie: This song appeared in 2015 Junglee Pictures and Excel Entertainment’s comic caper Dil Dhadakne Do (Let the Heart Beat) directed by Zoya Akhtar and produced by Ritesh Sidhwani and Farhan Akhtar. The movie starred Anil Kapoor, Shefali Shetty, Priyanka Chopra, Ranveer Singh, Anushka Sharma, Rahul Bose, Zarina Wahab, etc. Aamir Khan performed the voice over for the dog, which is the narrator of the movie.
Kamal Mehra (Anil Kapoor), a businessman owns a failing company Ayka. His relationship with his wife Neelam (Shefali Shetty) is troubled. He has 2 children – Ayesha (Priyanka Chopra) and Kabir (Ranveer Singh). Pluto is their family dog, which functions as the narrator.
Ayesha is a successful businesswoman in her own right, running a travel portal rated number 2 in the market. She has an unhappy marriage with Manav Sangha (Rahul Bose). This man is a control freak and a narcissistic husband. He and his mother Smita (Zarina Wahab) hate Ayesha’s family. Kabir is an unwilling participant in the family business, though he prefers to be a pilot.
Kamal and Neelam’s 30th wedding anniversary is decided to be celebrated in a cruise ship during a 10-day cruise across the Mediterranean. The entire arrangements are made by Ayesha. But, her name is dropped from the invite because she is the married daughter. Kamal and Neelam would prefer her to have children and sit at home rather than run a business.
The invitees for the cruise include several business families particularly the Soods – Lalit Sood (Parmeet Sethi), his wife Naina (Dolly Mattoo) and their daughter Noori (Riddhima Sud). Kabir’s parents have planned the alliance of their son with Noori so that Lalit could support the drowing ship called Ayka.
But, fate has something else in store for them. On the cruise, Kabir meets Farah Ali (Anushka Sharma) the lead dancer of the troupe hired for the cruise. Kabir and Farah begin to date each other. Noori falls in love with her father’s business rival Vinod Khanna (Manoj Pahwa) and Vandana’s (Preeti Mamgain) son Rana Khanna (Vikrant Massey). But, when she is caught at a night out by her mother, she lies that she was with Kabir.
Soon, the Soods and the Mehras begin serious discussions about their children’s marriage. Noori and Rana confront Kabir about this. When Kabir is convinced that the other 2 are really in love, he suggests a plan to avoid the marriage between the wrong couple. In the meantime, Ayesha is frustrated with her marriage and is thinking of divorce. Enter her erstwhile boyfriend, journalist Sunny Gill (Farhan Akhtar). Sunny is Kamal Mehra’s manager Amrish’s (Ikhlaque Khan) son, who was exiled to America by Kamal Mehra because he and Ayesha were getting too close.
That evening everybody assembles at the clubhouse and sing this song.
Song: The lyrics were penned by Javed Akhtar and the music was scored by Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy.
The gist of the song is, “Let me perform on the beats of Bhangra. You perform on Gidda beats. Let us create such an atmosphere that everybody become intoxicated. My heart wants to bring the moon and the stars on the earth. Let me keep the moon on these hands. Let me fill your forehead with stars.” The man wants to marry the girl. According to Bollywood lingo, filling forehead or the middle parting of hair with stars mean a marriage ritual.
Video: Cinematography is by Carlos Catalan. Dance choreography is by Bosco Martis-Caesar Gonsalves.
The video opens as the mike is being passed around the crowd. No one wants to say anything. The music has begun. Ranveer Singh takes the mike and begins the song. The mike is passed to Riddhima Sud and Zarina Wahab, who think what to sing. Priyanka Chopra takes the mike and sings. Everybody is dancing and clapping. Manoj Pahwa takes the mike and sings a few lines. This way all the invitees and the hosts sing and have fun in this song.
Artists: The playback singer is Shankar Mahadevan, Farhan Akhtar, Manish Tipu, Yashita Sharma and Sukhwinder Singh and the onscreen performances are by Ranveer Singh, Priyanka Chopra, Rahul Bose, Anil Kapoor, Shefali Shetty, Manoj Pahwa and others.
Cultural Influence: This typically Bollywood filmi song on Punjabi Bhangra and Gidda beats. Gidda is another Punjabi ladies version of folk dance. I just love this song among the recent lot. It is so clean! The song and the artists are good. The video is also watchable for the same.
