Kabira – Rekha/Tochi – Pritam Chakraborty | Yeh Jawani Hai Deewani (2013)

Movie: This song appeared in 2013 Dharma Productions’ hit romantic drama Yeh Jawani Hai Deewani (This Youth is Crazy) produced by Karan Johar and directed by Ayan Mukherji. The movie starred Ranbir Kapoor, Deepika Padukone, Aditya Roy Kapur, Kalki Koechlin, Kunal Roy Kapur, late Farooq Sheikh, Dolly Ahluwalia, etc.
After a chance meeting between shy and nerdy Naina Talwar (Deepika Padukone) and her cool and funky school friend Aditi Mehra (Kalki Koechlin), Naina decides overnight to go to Manali for vacations, without even informing her home.
Avinash ‘Avi’ Yog (Aditya Roy Kapur) and Kabir ‘Bunny’ Thapar (Ranbir Kapoor) are also going for the trip. Kabir is a flirty chap, who is not interested in marrying or settling down. During the mountain trek, Kabir and Naina are attracted to each other despite his flirting with other girls. He teaches her to have fun and more importantly to love herself and life.
Naina falls in love with Kabir, but, she knows that he loved traveling more. Aditi is in love with Avinash, but, he does not reciprocate her feelings. Avinash keeps flirting with other girls. This hurts Aditi.
While they are returning from the trek, the friends get to know that Kabir is going to Chicago to study journalism. Initially, they are shocked. But then, they all have to accept it. Naina holds herself from saying her love for him and lets him go.
8 years down the line, Kabir is still in America working as a videographer with a TV Channel. He has just received an offer to host a prestigious project. Aditi sends him a video invite for her destination wedding in Rajasthan. Back in India, she is actually marrying a simpleton Taran (Kunal Roy Kapur), who is an awkward and weird man but good at heart. Kabir arrives at the wedding venue with a lot of fanfare.
But, Naina realizes that Kabir is not the same boy she had met 8 years ago. He had lost his genuine happiness in the process of fulfilling his dream of traveling the world over. He could not even be present during his father’s (Farooq Sheikh) funeral, due to his dream of traveling. The photographer of the event Vikram (Rana Dugubatti) was getting attracted to Naina. Kabir gets jealous and he has an altercation with Naina. She reveals that she cannot fall in love with him yet again because his dreams were more important for him. They come close to each other but Naina tells him to leave her alone. It is at this time that this song is sung in the background. Aditi’s marriage rituals are also shown during this song.
Song: The music of this song was scored by Pritam Chakraborty and the lyrics were penned by Amitabh Bhattacharya.
This gist of the song is, “How is your selfishness? You neither select sun’s heat nor shade. Your feet do not stop anywhere. You have become a nomad. You have traveled the 7 seas. Still, why are you unhappy on the inside?”
Video: Cinematography is by Manikandan.
The video opens as Deepika Padukone and Ranbir Kapoor are hugging each other. She is crying. She pushes him away and moves off wiping her tears. Kalki Koechlin joins her as she moves away. Aditya Roy Kapur also joins them. Ranbir Kapoor is left thinking. A female voice is heard in the background.
A stark contrast is seen with a sorrowful Ranbir Kapoor and the others rejoicing. As he thinks the night gets over and a male voice joins in the song. He looks at the book of dreams that he had made with the photographs he had collected while traveling the world. He begins to pack his bags. Different North Indian wedding rituals are shown.
As the final rituals begin, Ranbir Kapoor sidles close to Deepika Padukone but still, they are metaphorically mountains apart. After the wedding is over, Kalki Koechlin comes to hug her friends. Kunal Roy Kapur takes her away and Ranbir Kapoor and Deepika Padukone are left standing in front of each other with a question mark in front of them.
Ranbir Kapoor is also crying now. He leaves the place. The song and the video end there.
Artists: The playback singers of this song are Rekha Bharadwaj and Tochi Raina and the onscreen performances are by Ranbir Kapoor, Deepika Padukone, Kalki Koechlin, Aditya Roy Kapur, Kunal Roy Kapur and others.
Cultural Influence: This is a typically filmi sad song where the hero is being questioned by his conscience about what he wants in reality. The song and the artists are good. The video is watchable for the same.
