Dilliwali girlfriend – Arjit/Sunidhi – Pritam Chakraborty – Ranbir/Deepika | Yeh Jawani Hai Deewani (2013)

Aditya Roy Kapur and Kunal Roy Kapur are actually real brothers.
Movie: This song appeared in 2013 Dharma Productions’ hit romantic drama Yeh Jawani Hai Deewani (This Youth is Crazy) produced by Karan Johar and directed by Ayan Mukherji. The movie starred Ranbir Kapoor, Deepika Padukone, Aditya Roy Kapur, Kalki Koechlin, Kunal Roy Kapur, etc.
After a chance meeting between shy and nerdy Naina Talwar (Deepika Padukone) and her cool and funky school friend Aditi Mehra (Kalki Koechlin), Naina decides overnight to go to Manali for vacations, without even informing her home.
Avinash ‘Avi’ Yog (Aditya Roy Kapur) and Kabir ‘Bunny’ Thapar (Ranbir Kapoor) are also going for the trip. Kabir is a flirty chap, who is not interested in settling down or even marrying. During the mountain trek, Kabir and Naina are attracted to each other despite his flirting with other girls. He teaches her to have fun and more importantly to love herself and life.
Naina falls in love with Kabir, but, she knows that he loved traveling more. Aditi is in love with Avinash, but, he does not reciprocate her feelings. Avinash keeps flirting with other girls. This hurts Aditi.
While they are returning from the trek, the friends get to know that Kabir is going to Chicago to study journalism. Initially, they are shocked. But then, they all have to accept it. Naina stops herself from revealing her love for him and lets him go.
8 years down the line Kabir is still in America working as a videographer with a TV Channel. He has just received an offer to host a prestigious project. Aditi sends him a video invite for her destination wedding in Rajasthan. Back in India, she is actually marrying a simpleton Taran (Kunal Roy Kapur), who is an awkward and weird man but good at heart. Kabir arrives at the wedding venue with a lot of fanfare. During the Sangeet, Taran performs very well because Kabir gives him some alcohol to overcome his nervousness. Naina is upset that she wanted to be the best. Kabir takes her to the stage to sing this song. She also joins him in the song and dance sequence.
Song: The music of this song was scored by Pritam Chakraborty and the lyrics were penned by Amitabh Bhattacharya.
The gist of the song is that the man had come to the girl after leaving his old girlfriend from Delhi. He had overcome so many obstacles to be with her. He wanted to get married to her, now.
Video: Cinematography is by Manikandan. Dance choreography is by Remo D’Souza.
The video opens with the spotlight on Ranbir Kapoor, who begins the dance on the music of this song. Then, the light comes on all over the stage. Deepika Padukone is standing near him. Ranbir Kapoor begins to sing as well. Some other dancers jump onto the stage and join the lead pair in the dance.
Deepika Padukone also begins to sing the song as she dances. Kalki Koechlin and Kunal Roy Kapoor are enjoying the dance. Aditya Roy Kapur looks on and soon, begins to laugh. They pull Aditya Roy Kapur, Kalki Koechlin and Kunal Roy Kapoor also into the dance. The music ends with a flourish and the video ends there.
Artists: The playback singers of this song are Arjit Singh and Sunidhi Chauhan and the onscreen performances are by Ranbir Kapoor, Deepika Padukone, Kalki Koechlin, Aditya Roy Kapur, Kunal Roy Kapur and others.
Cultural Influence: This is a typically filmi feet-tapping romantic song where the hero says that he had left his previous girlfriend to be with the heroine. The presence of the name of the metro Delhi is just for the sake of rhyming of the song. Now, I don’t understand this concept of leaving one partner for a more beautiful or sexy partner. This way most people will be dumped for the others. Sometimes overcoming the fact of being ditched also becomes an emotional and psychological issue. Whatever happened to real love of yore, which looked beyond looks? But, the song and the artists are good. The video is watchable for the same.
