Hum se hai sara jahan – Sadhana/Jatin – Jatin-Lalit | Jo Jeeta Wahi Sikander (1992)

After giving several beautiful songs like this one, the music director duo Jatin-Lalit split in 2006. During an interview with me, Jatin said that Lalit would compete with him for every single song-assignment that they had received. Where other music duos would split up the songs between them, competing with each other became a downfall for them.
Movie: This song appeared in 1992 N H Films’ sports drama Jo Jeeta Wahi Sikander (The One Who Wins is the King) directed by Mansoor Khan and produced by late Nasir Hussain. The movie starred Aamir Khan, Ayesha Jhulka, Deepak Tijori, Pooja Bedi, Mamik Singh, Kiran Zaveri, Kulbhushan Kharbanda, etc.
Some colleges in Dehradun are described in the beginning of the movie. It is not clear whether they mean the junior or the senior college. Often there is confusion if these are colleges and schools, as the students wear uniforms. Rajput College consists of students from affluent backgrounds. Model College has students from poor local families. Other colleges are Xavier’s and Queen’s, the latter is an all-girls college and guys from the other 3 colleges try to woo the students there.
The town hosts the annual inter-college sports championship with a marathon cycle race as the main event. The beginning of the movie shows the race between Ratanlal Sharma (Mamik Singh) of Model College and Shekhar Malhotra (Deepak Tijori) of Rajput College. Shekhar wins the race since Ratan has an inferior bike. Shekhar becomes overconfident and arrogant.
Sanju (Aamir Khan) is Ratan’s younger brother and is everything opposite of Ratan. He is a carefree boy and always gets into trouble with his father Ramlal (Kulbhushan Kharbanda), who wants him to be more mature and responsible like his brother. Ramlal runs a café near his home. Sanju and his little gang, including a girl Anjali (Ayesha Jhulka), bunk their sports lessons to smoke cigarettes and roam around the town. Anjali has a crush on Sanju.
On the other hand, Sanju has fallen for Devika (Pooja Bedi) from Queen’s College. He thinks it is real love. Devika is under the impression that Sanju is from Xavier’s. Soon, Sanju regrets it and is about to tell her that he is a local boy, but, he loses the opportunity. All the colleges participate in the intercollegiate song-and-dance competition. Xavier’s College participates with St. Anne’s and they perform this song.
Song: The music of this song was scored by Jatin-Lalit and the lyrics were penned by Majrooh Sultanpuri.
The gist of the song is, “We are crazy about our friends. We throng where love is present. Songs are young because of us. The world is alive because of us.”
Video: Cinematography is by Najeeb Khan. The dance choreography is by Madhav Kishan-Farha Khan-Suresh Bhatt.
The video opens with 2 Xavier’s students playing the drums and the guitar. Some girls and boys begin to dance on the music. Pooja Bedi and Kiran Vairale run to the entry point to the stage to watch the performance thinking Aamir Khan would be performing then. Deepak Tijori joins her.
Aamir Khan briefs his team of Ayesha Jhulka and others and goes toward the stage. Music director Jatin and another girl appear on stage dancing. He has begun singing the song. Pooja Bedi and Kiran Vairale are disappointed. The girl with Jatin begins to sing. The judges give their points to the team.
Mamik Singh comes to the green room to tell his team to be ready for their turn. Beyond this, the audio of the song continues. But, the video is of the song Jawan ho yaron… This is the only video I found on the net with this song separately available.
Artists: The playback of this song was sung by Sadhana Sargam and Jatin and the onscreen performances are by Aamir Khan, Ayesha Jhulka, Deepak Tijori, Pooja Bedi, Kiran Vairale, Jatin and others.
Cultural Influence: This is a typically filmi song-and-dance sequence, performed on stage for a competition. The song and the artists are good. The video is watchable for the same.
