Movie: This song appeared in 2013 Dharma Productions’ hit romantic drama Yeh Jawani Hai Deewani (This Youth is Crazy) produced by Karan Johar and directed by Ayan Mukherji. The movie starred Ranbir Kapoor, Deepika Padukone, Aditya Roy Kapur, Kalki Koechlin, Kunal Roy Kapur, Dolly Ahluwalia, etc.
The movie begins with Naina Talwar (Deepika Padukone) going shopping with her mother (Dolly Ahluwalia) and meeting her school friend Aditi Mehra (Kalki Koechlin) there. Aditi is an outgoing funky girl while Naina is a shy and nerdy student of medicine. When Naina hears that Aditi is going to Manali for vacations, she realizes what she had missed all her life.
Avinash ‘Avi’ Yog (Aditya Roy Kapur) and Kabir ‘Bunny’ Thapar (Ranbir Kapoor) are also going for the trip. Naina decides overnight to join them and leaves for the trip without informing at home. Kabir is a flirty chap, who is not interested in marrying or settling down. During the mountain trek, Kabir and Naina are attracted to each other despite his flirting with other girls. He teaches her to have fun and more importantly to love herself and life.
Naina falls in love with Kabir, but, she knows that he loved traveling more. Aditi is in love with Avinash, but, he does not reciprocate her feelings. Avinash keeps flirting with other girls. This hurts Aditi.
While they are returning from the trek, the friends get to know that Kabir is going to Chicago to study journalism. Initially, they are shocked. But then, they all have to accept it. Naina stops herself from saying her love for him and lets him go.
8 years down the line Kabir is still in America working as a videographer with a TV Channel. He has just received an offer to host a prestigious project. Aditi sends him a video invite for her destination wedding in Rajasthan. Back in India, she is actually marrying a simpleton Taran (Kunal Roy Kapur), who is an awkward and weird man but good at heart. During the prelude event to the wedding, Ranbir Kapoor sings this song and others join him in it.
Song: The music of this song was scored by Pritam Chakraborty and the lyrics were penned by Amitabh Bhattacharya.
This is a rap song. On first thoughts, you feel that the words are just put there to rhyme. But, on second thoughts some meaning can be identified. The gist of the song is, “Wayward heart does not listen to sense.”
Video: Cinematography is by Manikandan. Dance choreography is by Remo D’Souza.
The video opens with the shot of Deepika Padukone listening to music beginning to play from behind. Everybody looks at the direction from where the music is coming. Ranbir Kapoor begins to say a few words from hiding. He suddenly appears from behind a door. Ranbir Kapoor and Deepika Padukone exchange smiles and he goes to the rapidly approaching Kalki Koechlin to hug her.
Ranbir Kapoor begins to sing and also to dance. He gets on to a dining table and throws away the filled dishes to jumps off and continue dancing. He approaches Deepika Padukone and is surprised to find her ravishing. He sprays champagne on Deepika Padukone and throws a chair on a large set of neatly arranged glass goblets, which break and fall down.
Kalki Koechlin and Deepika Padukone join him in the song, as they continue to dance. Kalki Koechlin hugs Deepika Padukone. Kalki Koechlin falls down exhausted on Kunal Roy Kapoor and Ranbir Kapoor and they hold her from falling down. Thus end the song and the video.
Artists: The playback singers of this song are Benny Dayal and Shefali Alvarez and the onscreen performances are by Ranbir Kapoor, Deepika Padukone, Kalki Koechlin, Aditya Roy Kapur, Kunal Roy Kapur and others.
Cultural Influence: This is a typically filmi feet-tapping romantic rap song. The song and the artists are good. The video is watchable for the same.
