Subhanallah – Sreeram/Shilpa – Pritam Chakraborty – Ranbir/Deepika | Yeh Jawani Hai Deewani (2013)

This movie ran into controversy when most of the shooting was done in Kashmir’s Gulmarg and the credit was given to Manali.
Movie: This song appeared in 2013 Dharma Productions’ hit romantic drama Yeh Jawani Hai Deewani (This Youth is Crazy) produced by Karan Johar and directed by Ayan Mukherji. The movie starred Ranbir Kapoor, Deepika Padukone, Aditya Roy Kapur, Kalki Koechlin, Farooq Sheikh, Tanvi Azmi, etc.
The movie begins with Naina Talwar (Deepika Padukone) going shopping with her mother (Dolly Ahluwalia) and meeting her school friend Aditi Mehra (Kalki Koechlin) there. Aditi is an outgoing funky girl while Naina is a shy and nerdy student of medicine. When Naina hears that Aditi is going to Manali for vacations, she realizes what she had missed all through her life.
Kabir ‘Bunny’ Thapar (Ranbir Kapoor) and Avinash ‘Avi’ Yog (Aditya Roy Kapur) are also going for the trip. Naina decides overnight to join them and leaves for the trip without informing at home. Kabir is a flirty chap, who only wants to travel the world. He is not interested in marrying or settling down. He stays with a supportive father (Farooq Sheikh) and his step-mother (Tanvi Azmi). During the mountain trek, Kabir and Naina come close to each other despite his flirting with other girls. He teaches her to let go of herself and more importantly to love herself and life. It is at this time that she thinks that Kabir is singing this song for her.
Song: The music of this song was scored by Pritam Chakraborty and the lyrics were penned by Amitabh Bhattacharya.
The boy says, “You are yearning. I can see it in your eyes. I will show you what all you are yearning for. The mirror is telling a story, a different story. Whatever is happening is happening for the first time.” The girl replies. “Whatever I am today is because of you. You are praising me just like that.”
Video: Cinematography is by Manikandan. Dance choreography is by Remo D’Souza.
The video opens with Deepika Padukone looking down and smiling. The music begins. Deepika Padukone goes to the party that is happening in another camp. She was finding it difficult to go to the party since she was shy and reserved by nature. But, when Ranbir Kapoor explains to her the true meaning of living life, she goes to the party.
Deepika Padukone’s friends are happy to see her. She goes to sit with Ranbir Kapoor. But, another girl pulls him to go with her elsewhere. Deepika Padukone feels that he has come back to sit on the other side of her and begins the song. She feels shy and tries to move away from him. But, he comes back in front of her continuing the song.
While she is imagining this, suddenly Aditya Roy Kapur appears from nowhere and places a casual hand on her shoulders to take her with him to the place where some youngsters are dancing. There also she thinks Ranbir Kapoor is with her, singing. The next morning the young people are running on snow with their backpacks.
They all throw snowballs at each other. Deepika Padukone is looking at them happily and expectantly. She sees Ranbir Kapoor also playing with snow balls. But, the next instant she feels he is near her singing to her. At that moment, Ranbir Kapoor throws a snowball on her and she is shaken back from her reverie.
Play over, they all climb toward their next camp. That night, when she is shivering in the cold, she imagines that he comes and wraps his shawl around her. He continues the song. Soon, she sees him in reality and takes over the song. Soon they reach the summit. The song peters out and the video ends there.
Artists: The playback singers of this song are Sreeram and Shilpa Rao and the onscreen performances are by Ranbir Kapoor, Deepika Padukone and others.
Cultural Influence: This is a typically filmi romantic song, which the heroine imagines is being sung by the hero for her. The song and the artists are good. The video is watchable for the same. A beautiful song. Subhanallah!
