Movie: This song appeared in 1992 N H Films’ sports drama Jo Jeeta Wahi Sikander (The One Who Wins is the King) directed by Mansoor Khan and produced by late Nasir Hussain. The movie starred Aamir Khan, Ayesha Jhulka, Pooja Bedi, Mamik Singh, Kulbhushan Kharbanda, Deepak Tijori, etc.
The various colleges in Dehradun are described in the beginning of the movie. It is not clear whether they mean the junior or the senior college. Often there is confusion if these are colleges and schools because all the students wear uniforms in their college. In India, there is no uniform dress code even in junior colleges, let alone senior colleges. Rajput College consists of students from affluent backgrounds. Model College has students from poor local families. Other colleges are Xavier’s and Queen’s, the latter is an all-girls college and guys from the other 3 colleges try to woo the students there.
The town hosts the annual inter-college sports championship with a marathon cycle race as the main event. The beginning of the movie shows the race between Ratanlal Sharma (Mamik Singh) of Model College and Shekhar Malhotra (Deepak Tijori) of Rajput College. Shekhar wins the race due to Ratan’s inferior bike. Shekhar becomes overconfident and arrogant.
Sanju (Aamir Khan) is Ratan’s younger brother and is everything opposite of Ratan. He is a carefree boy and always gets into trouble with his father Ramlal (Kulbhushan Kharbanda), who wants him to be more mature and responsible like his brother. Ramlal runs a café near his home. Ratan loves Kalpana (Kiran Zaveri) and she reciprocates his feelings.
Sanju and his little gang, including a girl Anjali (Ayesha Jhulka), who has a crush on Sanju; bunk their sports lessons to smoke cigarettes and roam around the town. Sanju has fallen for Devika (Pooja Bedi) from Queen’s College. He thinks it is real love. Anjali, on the other hand, thinks that Sanju loves her. It is at this time that Sanju and Anjali sing this song.
Song: The music of this song was scored by Jatin-Lalit and the lyrics were penned by Majrooh Sultanpuri.
The girl says, “You may not say anything, but, I can hear it that you have selected me as your beloved.” The boy says, “This is the first intoxication, first hangover. This is my first love. I am waiting for someone for the first time. Don’t ask me my condition. O my desperate heart, tell me.”
Video: Cinematography is by Najeeb Khan. The dance choreography is by Suresh Bhatt-Farha Khan-Madhav Kishan.
The video opens with Aamir Khan taking leave of Ayesha Jhulka by kissing her on her cheek. She is left sitting on the seat and thinking with a smile. This song is heard in the background sung by a female voice. She gets up with a smile when he reaches his first-floor balcony and waves to her.
Aamir Khan is next seen performing a ballroom dance in his room. Mamik Singh is watching him. Aamir Khan pulls up a surprised Mamik Singh and begins dancing with him. Ayesha Jhulka looks at Aamir Khan from her window and performs a few dance steps.
In the next shot, Aamir Khan is seen standing on a high ledge and throwing his sweater away. He also begins to sing the same song. He jumps off the ledge onto level ground and throws away his cap as well. He rolls down a grassy slope. Aamir Khan thinks Pooja Bedi had come to visit him at his father’s cafe. She gives a Marlyn Monroe style flying dress shot, which is only to present Pooja Bedi as a sex object nd nothing else.
Aamir Khan thinks Pooja Bedi is lying on a car and he kisses her virtual existence. Ayesha Jhulka thinks he is kissing her. He runs about the tea gardens and then with other male friends. He is, now, laying on the last bench in class and gets up to throw all the papers he has in his hand.
The papers fall on all the other students including Ayesha Jhulka, who is deep in thought. He cycles into his room, which shocks Mamik Singh. Mamik Singh suddenly gets up from his counter at the cafe and Kiran Zaveri is seen coming into the eatery. He places some bread into her basket with a piece of paper.
Ayesha Jhulka moves around gracefully performing dance movements in her father’s garage. In the morning, she sees Aamir Khan looking at a necklace in the local jeweler’s shop window. Mamik Singh is waiting for someone in the woods and he sees Kiran Zaveri coming toward him. The video ends there.
Artists: The playback of this song was sung by Udit Narayan and Sadhana Sargam and the onscreen performances are by Aamir Khan, Ayesha Jhulka, Mamik Singh, Pooja Bedi, Kiran Zaveri and others.
Cultural Influence: This is a typically filmi song where the heroine is in love with the hero. But, she does not know that the hero thinks he is in love with someone else. The song and Aamir Khan and Ayesha Jhulka are good. The video is watchable for the same.
