Chupakar meri ankhon ko – Lata/Rafi – Chitragupt – Shyama/Jawahar | Bhabhi (1957)


Movie: This song appeared in 1957 hit family drama Bhabhi (Sister-in-law) directed by Krishnan-Panju and produced by A V Meiyappan under the banner of AVM Productions. The movie starred late Balraj Sahni, late Pandhari Bai, Jawahar Kaul, Shyama, Raja Gosavi, Nalini, late Nanda, late Durga Khote, Jagdeep, Bipin Gupta, etc.
Shanta (Pandhari Bai) is a graduate, but, gets married to a lesser educated widowed businessman Ratanlal (Balraj Sahni). Ratanlal already has a son, Mithu from his previous marriage. The other members of his family include 3 brothers – Ramesh, Rajan and Baldev – and an aunt (Durga Khote). Ratanlal allows Shanta’s child-widow sister Lata (Nanda) also to live with them. Advocate Motilal (Bipin Gupta) has been Ratanlal’s mentor since the death of Ratanlal’s father.
Soon, Mithu (Daisy Irani) is a school-going boy. In the meantime, Ratanlal’s brother Ramesh (Jawahar Kaul) also becomes a lawyer and bags a job with their family friend Advocate Motilal. Ratanlal decides to arrange his brother Ramesh’s marriage with his manager Munshiram’s (Shivraj) daughter Mangala (Nalini). But, Ramesh and Advocate Motilal’s daughter Tara (Shyama) are in love with each other. Ratanlal is blissfully ignorant of this fact. Ratanlal gets to know about it from his mentor Motilal and he changes his mind.
Ratanlal decides to marry Ramesh with Tara and Rajan with Mangala. When the newlyweds were being welcomed into the house, Lata runs out to apply tilak to Rajan. Mangala gets to know from some gossipmongering women that Lata is a child-widow and thinks her appearing in front of her inauspicious. At night, she fights with her husband and he gets angry as she had insulted Lata, who was loved by everyone at their home.
On the other hand, Tara and Ramesh are beginning their wedded life in bliss by singing this song.
Song: The lyrics of this song were penned by Rajinder Kishen and the music was composed by Chitragupt.
The girl says, “He covers my eyes and asks me, who he is. How will I take his name, who always lives in my heart?” The man says, “Until I see that heart, how will I be convinced?” The girl replies, “Even this style of yours makes my heart overcome with love for you. Your complaint is no less than love.”

The video opens with Shyama smelling the fragrance of some white flowers. Jawahar Kaul places his hands on her eyes. She begins the song. He hums the song. She gets up from the decorated bed and moves away from him. He follows her. She places her hands on her face and continues to sing.
Shyama performs a few steps. Jawahar Kaul joins her in the song. She comes and sits on the sofa shyly. She picks up a garland and places it around his neck. Raja Gosavi sees the shadows of the 2 from the window. Shyama takes Jawahar Kaul toward their bed and gives him a glass of milk. The video ends there.

Cultural Influence: This is a typical filmi song, sung by the boy and the girl during their first night. The song and the artists are good. The video is watchable for the same.
