Prem Dilwale (Salman Khan) collects donations for the Delhi-based Princess Maithili’s (Sonam Kapoor) Uphaar Foundation, which delivers free food for poor children. Prem idolizes Maithili. But, she is engaged to Prince Vijay Singh (Salman Khan again) of Pritampur.
Unknown to all, Vijay encounters a near fatal accident while returning from his step-sisters’ place. On the other hand, Prem gets the chance to meet Maithili in person. He gets to know that she is going to be present for Prince Vijay’s coronation. Prem and his friend Kanhaiya (Deepak Dobriyal) leave for Pritampur since she is expected there for Prince Vijay’s coronation ceremony. On the way, he meets the head of palace security staff Sanjay (Deepraj Rana) and the man is stunned that Prem is the Prince’s exact look-alike.
Sanjay takes Prem and his friend to the fort. Sanjay goes to a hidden chamber in the fort where the Prince is being treated for coma. The Prince was saved by the palace loyals when the accident had occurred. The Prince’s coronation is in 4 days, he is not in a position to attend it. Sanjay eventually convinces Diwan Sahab (Anupam Kher) that Prem can act as a front for the Prince until the latter recovers.
Diwan Sahab convinces Prem to do the job. He agrees, but, refuses money in return for doing the job. Diwan Sahab tells Prem about the Prince’s mannerisms. He also tells him about the love-hate relationship between the Prince and his step-sisters Princess Chandrika (Swara Bhaskar) and Princess Radhika (Aashika Bhatia). The Prince’s step-brother Prince Ajay Singh (Neil Nitin Mukesh), CEO of Pritampur Estate Properties Chirag Singh (Arman Kohli) and the Price’s secretary Sameera (Samaira Rao) were in cahoots with each other and had plotted the death of the Prince Vijay Singh. But, there was no proof against them with the palace loyals as yet. In all this façade, Kanhaiya’s role is to keep Sameera away from Prem. If she came too close to him, she would be able to know that it is not the real Prince.
Everything goes fine until Princess Maithili arrives. She is not happy about their relationship. She wants to know where she stands as far as the Prince is concerned. She has several complaints about the Prince, which she enlists in a song. In the next few days, Maithili is very impressed by what Prem or the Prince does. Prem’s loving behavior changes all and Chandrika and Radhika also become friends with him. Maithili falls deeper and deeper in love with Prem. But, Prem is unable to reciprocate her feelings because he knows that she is betrothed to the Prince.
The Prince is kidnapped and Chirag visits Diwan Sahab to negotiate his return. Chirag has created a lot of misunderstanding about Prem and Ajay with Vijay. After the final fight, Prem clears the misunderstandings. During the fight, Chirag has already fallen to his death. Having set everything right, Prem leaves the palace. Maithili has been told about the reality by Diwan Sahab and is very sad. She looks at Prem as he leaves in the Prince’s father’s car.
Vijay and Maithili talk about the situation and he gets convinced that he would not be able to make himself like Prem. Thus, he convinces Maithili’s grandmother (Suhasini Mulay) and everybody else for the marriage of Maithili with Prem. When they visit Prem, they convince him as well. Prem and Maithili get married.
