Movie: This song appeared in 1973 thriller Joshila (Spirited) directed by late Yash Chopra and produced by Gulshan Rai. The movie starred late Dev Anand, Hema Malini, Rakhi, late Manmohan Krishna, late A K Hangal, Sulochana, Padma Khanna, Master Satyajit, etc.
Shalini (Hema Malini) has come to the prison during her college vacations. She is the friend of the jailor’s (Manmohan Krishna) daughter Chandra (Sheetal). Shalini gets acquainted with one of the inmates Amar (Dev Anand), who is serving the term for murder. One day, on Shalini’s query, in a flashback, he talks about his family and his girlfriend, Sapna (Rakhi). His father (A K Hangal) expires, leaving Amar and the other members of their family with a lot of loans that need to be settled. Amar becomes a supervisor in Sapna’s brother’s (Roopesh Kumar) factory. One night, while saving the honor of a girl, Amar kills Sapna’s brother. If justice had prevailed, he could have been left off with a minimum sentence. But, the girl, whose honor he had saved, turns the tables on him and accuses him of the sexual assault. The flashback ends there.
Soon, Amar saves the jailor from a fatal assault of some revolting prisoners. He is released before his 2 years’ remaining sentence is completed. When he reaches home, he finds his mother (Sulochana), sister Manju (Padma Khanna) and brother Ravi (Master Satyajit) living the life of a destitute. He sees Manju dancing in skimpy clothes for the entertainment of people in a club and she is performing this song. She has told her mother that she is taking tuitions.
Song: The lyrics of this song were penned by Sahir Ludhyanvi and the music was scored by R D Burman.
The girl says, “I am shivering right now. Stay back for some time. The whole night remains.”
Video: Cinematography is by Fali Mistry. Dance choreography is by Suresh Bhatt-P L Raj.
The video opens with Dev Anand attending an interview. The moment he sees Rakhi he rejects the job and leaves. While he has his tea in a hotel, he sees the ad in a newspaper showing Padma Khanna in skimpy clothes. He reaches the club, where she is dancing. The next shot is of Padma Khanna screaming.
Another male dancer seems to be molesting Padma Khanna from behind a curtain and he pushes her toward the main dance area. The music has already begun. Both of them perform a few steps and the male dancer tears Padma Khanna’s sleeves and the leggings. Madan Puri is enjoying the dance as well as a drink.
Padma Khanna begins the song. After some vigorous dancing by the 2, she continues to sing. She is, now, lying on a rotating disc. The male dancer gifts some flowers to her and she is happy. Dev Anand is seen entering the club. He approaches Padma Khanna and slaps her. Madan Puri and others are shocked and stand up. She runs away from the dance area and he follows her. The video ends as he slaps her again in her green room.
Artists: The playback of this song was sung by Asha Bhonsle and the onscreen performances are by Padma Khanna, Dev Anand, Madan Puri and others.
Cultural Influence: This is a typical filmi item song of today performed by the hero’s sister. I did not like the fact that the girl likes the man, who tried to molest her. The actor has been made to do it. Frankly, it is revolting, being a girl myself. But, otherwise, the song has been rendered well by my favorite singer. The video is watchable.
