Dil par hua aisa jadoo – Rafi – O P Nayyar – Guru Dutt | Mr. and Mrs. ’55 (1955)


Movie: This song appeared in the romantic comic caper Mr. and Mrs. ’55, produced and directed by late Guru Dutt under the banner of Guru Dutt Films. The movie starred Guru Dutt, late Madhubala, late Lalita Pawar, late Johnny Walker, Jagdeep, Vinita Bhatt, etc.

Preetam (Guru Dutt) is a struggling cartoonist and meets Anita (Madhubala) at a tennis match, as she watches her favorite tennis star. He finds a fragrant scarf dropped by Anita and keeps it with him. Anita is a westernized heir to a lot of wealth but is controlled by her feminist Aunt Sita Devi (Lalita Pawar). Preetam has fallen in love with Anita and sings this song soon after.

Song: The lyrics of this song were penned by Majrooh Sultanpuri and the music was composed by O P Nayyar.

The man says that the girl had the power to magically intoxicate his heart. Thus, when he had seen her, his condition changed. When she looked at him, his fortune turned for the better.

The video opens with the close-up shot of Guru Dutt and Johnny Walker together. Guru Dutt has begun singing the song. Guru Dutt is saying that he has found someone, who has stolen his heart. Johnny Walker is visibly uncomfortable. The owner of the restaurant tells them to leave. They leave the place and stand in line for a bus.

Guru Dutt continues the song. Johnny Walker gets attracted to a passing girl. But, Guru Dutt pulls him back. They get into the bus that comes to the stop. They sit in one seat and Guru Dutt continues to sing. Guru Dutt places his hat on Johnny Walker’s head, which the other actor picks up and places back on Guru Dutt’s head.

They are thrown out of the bus because they do not have the money for the tickets. They fall down and pick themselves up. Johnny Walker is upset with Guru Dutt and goes in a direction different from what Guru Dutt takes. The video ends as Guru Dutt slides down an electric post, unconscious.

Cultural Influence: When a man falls in love with a girl, usually, he speaks to his friends. But, this being cinema, the makers have placed a song here. The song is very good and rendered well by Rafi Sahab. The video is watchable for the song and the artists.
