Movie: This song appeared in 1959 hit rom-com Dil Deke Dekho (Give your heart and see) produced by Sashadhar Mukherjee and directed by late Nasir Hussain under the banner of Filmalaya. The movie starred late Shammi Kapoor, Asha Parekh, Rajinder Nath (debut), Sulochana, etc. Shammi Kapoor has said in an interview that he wanted Waheeda Rehman as his heroine in this movie. But, the producer had already signed Asha Parekh and he encouraged her during the picturization of the movie. The movie was released in Asha Parekh’s 17th birthday.
Neeta (Asha Parekh) is an heiress and the only daughter of Jagat Narayan (Raj Mehra) in Nainital. She is told by her friends that their friend Sheila had been slapped by a drummer from Deonar Club. Neeta decides to avenge the insult to their friend. Neeta and her friends go to the club and she discusses her plans with them. Raja (Shammi Kapoor) is listening to them. He disguises himself and introduces himself to them as the manager of the club. He also informs them that there is enough security that would stop her from implementing what she had planned. Neeta stubbornly decides to go ahead with it, anyways.
Neeta goes to the green room to bribe one of the participants of the dance to give her the costume. Raja removes his disguise and goes to play the drums singing this song.
Song: The music of this memorable song has been composed by Usha Khanna (debut) and the lyrics were penned by Majrooh Sultanpuri. Usha Khanna has strived to give an O P Nayyaresque tinge to the song.
The man says that people, who attract others in love, should learn to give their hearts to the others as well.
Video: Cinematography is by Dilip Gupta. The operative cameraman is A Bhattacharya. Dance choreography is by Herman Benjamin- More-Sachin Shankar-Prabati Kumar.
The video was shot in a restaurant, which has a separate podium for performers. The first shot is of the orchestra. Then the camera pans to the drummer. Oh! that’s our hero – Shammi Kapoor on the drums! He has been told to play the drums all through the song. He has not been given any specific dance steps. He does not need to make any such movements because he keeps moving his head in co-ordination with the tune of the song.
The extra dancers are wearing wrap-around skirts covering ¾ of their legs, which looks good. The dancers use props all through the dance video. First, the girls wear on their backs all the alphabets of the title of the movie – Dil Deke Dekho, in a few heart-shaped props. They show the entire title while dancing.
In between the shots, the camera pans to the audience as well. Next, the girls use mats as props. This prop has been utilized very well by the choreographer. This particular dance has been choreographed in a typical Indian manner. Then the prop used is a thin cloth like a dupatta. They make several formations from it.
At the end of the song, the heroine Asha Parekh enters the stage wearing the dress of a fairy. She dances around everybody and finally goes toward Shammi Kapoor to hold his collar.
Artists: The playback of this song was sung by Mohammad Rafi and the onscreen performances are by Shammi Kapoor, Asha Parekh and others.
Cultural Influence: There are several dance shows on the television today and the participants are asked to use different props for the dances. Those who would like to participate in such dances should watch this video since the different props have been used efficiently here.
