The 2017 Grammy Awards were filled with beautiful moments. However, some of the most exciting came when our favorite country music artists took the stage. Between the great performances, some of the biggest awards of the night went to country artists Sturgill Simpson and Maren Morris.
Sturgill Simpson was honored with the Country Album of the Year Award, which took place during the pre-telecast festivities. The album, ‘A Sailor’s Guide to Earth,’ beat out some big named artists, like Loretta Lynn, Keith Urban and Maren Morris. For many, this was an unexpected win for the evening.
Simpson wrote the album in response to the birth of his first son. Just a week before winning the award, he and his wife welcomed their second child into the family.
Most of his fans feel as though this is a pivotal moment in his career and are pretty happy about the win. However, some country fans are a little disappointed that the album is lacking a signature country sound.
Another surprising win for the evening was Maren Morris’s win for Best Country Solo Performance. To take home this win, she had to beat out country powerhouses Miranda Lambert and Carrie Underwood. Brandy Clark and Keith Urban were also nominated for the award.
Along with winning this award, Morris was nominated for three others and even had a legendary performance with Alicia Keys. The video of the powerful duet has since gone viral and was definitely one of the best performances of the night.
All in all, the 2017 Grammy Awards proved to be a great night for country music. With lots of artists performing and winning awards, it was a night that should bring even more country music fans into the mix. For those who won awards, it will be interesting to see where their careers go from here.
