Movie: This song appeared in 1977 romantic drama Darling Darling produced by Kishore Doshi and directed by late Gogi Anand. The movie starred late Dev Anand, Zeenat Aman, late Jeevan, Poonam Sinha, late Nadira, late Durga Khote, late Mahmood, etc.
Kumar (Dev Anand) and Debu (Mahmood) are best friends. Kumar begins looking for a typical Indian but educated girl. He meets Madhu (Zeenat Aman), who is being tortured by her stepmother Mrs. Rai Bahadur (Nadira) and her half-sister Seema (Poonam Sinha). Madhu takes refuge in a village. But, her step-mother’s goons follow her to the village and kidnap her. Kumar sees them and rescues Madhu.
She tells him that she is Champa, a village girl. Kumar tutors her into a typical Indian educated girl that his grandmother wants. Kumar tells Champa that he would give her 0.1 million rupees if she acted the way he told her to. They introduce her as Madhu and Debu comes along disguised as her father. Dadi Maa immediately likes Madhu. Soon, Dadi Maa informs Madhu that all their riches is gone and even their mansion, where they are living, has been sold. Despite Kumar’s penury, Madhu marries him in a contract marriage. Immediately after their marriage, Dadi Maa leaves the place to go on a pilgrimage. The next day, Kumar is thrown out of his home by the person who had bought the mansion.
On being told the truth, Kumar goes to find his Dadi Maa. At Dadi Maa’s place, where she has gone for pilgrimage, Madhu reveals everything about herself. She also tells Kumar to help her out like she helped him. Thus, Madhu and Kumar venture into a new adventure as newlyweds. They find that Mrs. Rai Bahadur and psychiatrist Dr. Jeevan (Jeevan) are in cahoots with each other. They also want the vast wealth of Madhu. The first step that Kumar takes is to break the unity of Mrs. Rai Bahadur and Dr. Jeevan. He meets the psychiatrist and tells him that he is also with him. He also tells him to kill Madhu to obtain her wealth, deciding to split it 50-50.
Kumar and Madhu visit the Mahabaleshwar Fort. Madhu is in love with Kumar. All her romantic talk is greeted with indifference. Then, Dr. Jeevan comes that way disguised as a Pathan with a rifle to kill Madhu. Kumar, who was not interested in romance, protects her as he sings a love song.
Kumar reprimands Dr. Jeevan to have tried to kill Madhu during their visit to Mahabaleshwar. This was because if Madhu would have been killed, Kumar would have been blamed. Seema approaches Kumar and she and her mother Mrs. Rai Bahadur suggest that they kill Madhu. Then, Kumar would inherit the vast wealth and Kumar can eventually marry Seema. When Kumar goes back to Madhu’s bedroom, they fight and Kumar leaves the place. He visits his grandmother, who tells him that Madhu loves him unconditionally. Kumar returns to Madhu and tells her that he also loves her.
Soon, Dr. Jeevan tells Madhu that her father is alive and threatens her with dire consequences if she does not part with all her money and jewelry located in her bank. While leaving the bank, Madhu drops the key to her locker and cheque book on the bank manager’s desk and informs him that she would be soon leaving for London with her husband.
Dr. Jeevan escorts Madhu to his hospital for her to meet her father in the basement, where he has been imprisoned all this while. He then sets fire to the basement and is in a hurry to leave the place with all the loot. When the bank manager sees the key and the cheque book, he immediately calls Kumar to inform him of it and wishes him Bon Voyage. Since they had not intentions of going anywhere at that moment, Kumar immediately realizes that something is wrong.
Putting 2 and 2 together he reaches Dr. Jeevan’s mental hospital with Debu disguised as insane people. It is here that Kumar and Debu sing this song to rescue Madhu and her father.
Song: The music of this song was composed by R D Burman and the lyrics were penned by Majrooh Sultanpuri.
The man sings that this world is a madhouse and there is another mental hospital inside it. Everybody has to come to this hospital sometime or the other. This is a covert song to find where the girl is.
Video: Cinematography is by Fali Mistry.
The video opens with Dev Anand and Mahmood being restrained from attacking Jeevan, who is trying to leave the place. Dev Anand begins the song. He is wearing the dress of a fakir. The guards in the mental hospital try to put Dev Anand and Mahmood inside locked doors. But they are unable to do it. Eventually, they go inside of their own free will.
The grills are locked from outside. Zeenat Aman recognizes her husband’s voice and looks out hopefully from near the fire. Dev Anand creates a diversion for the guards and enters further inside. Both Dev Anand and Mahmood try to find ways to reach any unseen chamber, where Zeenat Aman could have been hidden.
They finally find the place from where smoke is being emitted. Dev Anand tells the other inmates to take care of the guards and they tie the guards up. With the guards being handled by Mahmood and the other inmates, Dev Anand enters the chamber where a fire is raging. He removes his disguise to find Zeenat Aman. The video ends there.
Artists: The playback of this song was sung by Kishore Kumar and R D Burman. The onscreen performances are by Dev Anand, Mahmood, Zeenat Aman, Jeevan, Sajjan, Nadira, and others.
Cultural Influence: Mad people can do anything they want. However, singing songs in tune with music can be difficult for them. This is a movie, so the makers have taken the cinematic liberty to place this song at this juncture in the movie. The song and the artists are good. The video is watchable, particularly for Mahmood’s antics.
