Chance the Rapper continues his run of excellence with a new video for “Same Drugs.”
The song is from Chance’s Grammy nominated album “Coloring Book.” The album has already sprung three singles and several videos. Each video has been unique and different. This video features Chance playing the piano with a Sesame-Street-style muppet sitting next to him. The video was color corrected to look like it was shot on film stock from the 1970s. A third of the way through the song the muppet raises her head off of Chance’s shoulder and pantomimes the female vocals of the song. The video ends with Chance taking a stroll through the studio which is populated with muppet workers.
In less than 24 hours the video has racked up over 300,000 views on YouTube. It’s currently trending as the #13 video on the website.
“Same Drugs” features all of the elements that have endeared Chance to his fans; the song has gospel influences and the video has the playfulness that would detract from other rappers’ brands. For Chance, however, it works. The man exudes joy and the audience seems to have no problem sharing in that joy.
Chance’s 2016 finished strong. He was nominated for a Grammy, invited to the White House and he led his fellow Chicago constituents to the polls on Election Day. 2017 is also shaping up to be something special for the young rapper. So far this year he has been tapped to play at the Grammy Awards and he is a model for the “Thank You Obama” clothing line. Right now it seems like there’s nothing he can’t do.
