Last week, Major Lazer dropped its follow-up single to Bieber-assisted “Cold Water” and Bad Royale-featured “My Number.” The song is entitled “Run Up” and features Nicki Minaj and Canadian rapper PARTYNEXTDOOR on vocals. “Run Up” has already shot up to the top 50 on iTunes and understandably so.
The outcome of the collaboration is a lush, mellow party tune. The trio that makes up Major Lazer (Diplo, Jillionaire and Walshy Fire) has plenty of experience in crafting top 10 hits, both together and separately.
Lyrically, “Run Up” fits neatly into the pop-rap love anthem genre. It compares love to a drug and makes references to expensive material possessions. Minaj’s verse includes a slightly political tongue-in-cheek line. She raps, “He want a mix between Hillary and Monica/I switch it up, I switch it up.” The line is no doubt clever, but definitely cringeworthy and a bit overdone. It’s reminiscent of Beyonce’s “He Monica Lewinsky’d all on my gown” line from her 2014 song “Partition.” The rest of the verses and choruses are rapped by PARTYNEXTDOOR.
Minaj and Nick Jonas have a duet entitled “Bom Bidi Bom” on the “Fifty Shades Darker” soundtrack. The movie and soundtrack are both set for release on Feb. 10.
Sonically, the track is infectiously danceable and the beats seem to have been taken some influence from Minaj’s Caribbean origins. What makes “Run Up” stand out from the majority of EDM tracks is its lack of builds and releases. The beat stays consistent and repeats throughout, but never gets boring.
