This is a sad friendship song, which touches the heart.
Movie: This song had appeared in the 1980-released hit action movie Dostana (Friendship) directed by Raj Khosla and produced by Yash Johar under the banner of Dharma Productions. The hit movie starred Amitabh Bachchan, Shatrughan Sinha, Zeenat Aman, late Amrish Puri, Prem Chopra, Paintal, late Pran and Helen. It was remade in Tamil as Sattam with Kamal Hassan.
Vijay (Amitabh Bachchan) and Ravi (Shatrughan Sinha) are the best of friends and do not question each other about their careers. Vijay is in the police department, while Ravi has taken up law. When Vijay catches criminals, Ravi bails them out in any which way. Ravi is also employed by Daaga (Prem Chopra). Once Vijay and Ravi both meet Sheetal (Zeenat Aman) at different places and times and both fall in love with her. Vijay tells Sheetal about his love and the feeling is reciprocated by her. On the other hand, Ravi’s crush is one-sided.
Ravi soon admits that he loves Sheetal to Vijay, who is shocked and decides that he would sacrifice his love for his friend’s sake. But, Daaga creates a misunderstanding between the 2 friends by showing Ravi a picture of Vijay and Sheetal together. Ravi and Vijay become alienated from each other for the first time in their lives.
Vijay is so hurt by his friend’s behavior that he sings this song during a party scene, where both Ravi and Sheetal are present among others.
Song: Music was composed by Laxmikant-Pyarelal and the lyricist was Anand Bakshi.
The man sings, “My friend, what has happened? I heard that you have become disloyal. It is not possible that you will curse me. It is not possible that you would ditch me. God knows, what actually happened. If you had asked me to give up my life, O my Beloved friend, I would have sacrificed it thinking that I have lived up to the expectations of true friendship. This sorrow is not less than the end of days. That you and I are not us anymore. My friend has got estranged from me.”
The lyrics in various ways inform the listener that the 2 friends have separated from each other.
Video: Cinematography is by Nariman A Irani.
The opening scene is that of a party. The song begins with the close-up shot of Amitabh Bachchan and then the camera focuses on Shatrughan Sinha. There is a beautiful painting of mountains and tall trees behind Amitabh Bachchan and some of the extras. Behind Shatrughan Sinha, there is a painting of a horse, which has opened its mouth.
Amitabh Bachchan is calm while singing the song. But Shatrughan Sinha is a little indifferent at first, which is shown by the things in the background as well. Towards the end of the song, he has tears in his eyes.
Mohammad Rafi is on the playback. But Amitabh Bachchan lip-syncs so perfectly with the actual throat movements that we feel that he is actually singing the song. Zeenat Aman is wearing a simple pink dress and is standing with some extras. Shatrughan Sinha is continuously drinking alcohol. Prem Chopra is shown blowing a cigarette and later drinking alcohol.
Amitabh Bachchan sings this song to clear the misunderstandings of Shatrughan Sinha. But, that doesn’t seem to happen.
Artists: Playback singer is Mohammad Rafi. Amitabh Bachchan lip-syncs to the song and Shatrughan Sinha, Zeenat Aman and Prem Chopra look on.
Cultural Influence: Misunderstandings happen between good friends. When they meet at a public place, they do clear the misunderstandings. Here cinematic liberty is taken and the spoken words have been made into a song.
