The story of Sujata involves the love relation between a high caste Brahmin young man Adheer (Sunil Dutt) and an untouchable girl Sujata (Nutan). On the backdrop of the movie is Dr. B R Ambedkar’s fight against untouchability and the myth of Chandalika in Hinduism. Thus the movie tries to criticize the practice of untouchability in India.

The Brahmin couple Upen (Tarun Bose) and Charu (Sulochana) brings up the orphaned girl from a lower caste Sujata. Though Upen is fond of the adopted child, his wife Charu and paternal aunt Giribala (Lalita Pawar) cannot completely accept Sujata, since she is an untouchable. Upen has a transferable job and when he retires he settles in Calcutta (Kolkata now). His 2 daughters have grown up and sing this song as a celebration of their childhood.

Song: The music of this song was composed by S D Burman and the lyrics were composed by Majrooh Sultanpuri.

This song celebrates childhood. The 2 girls remember how they were as a child and compare it to how things are now.

Video: Cinematography is by Kamal Bose and the cameraman is Montu Bose.

The video opens with Nutan folding dried clothes on the terrace when she hears Shashikala playing the piano downstairs. Shashikala begins the song and Nutan joins her, humming along. Shashikala does most of the singing while Nutan hums the tune all the while. Shashikala is sitting in the hall all through the song and Nutan is on the terrace picking up dried clothes during the song. The video ends with Shashikala ending the song and playing the endnotes of the music on the piano.

Artists: The playback has been sung by Geeta Dutt and Asha Bhonsle and the onscreen performances are by Shashikala and Nutan.

Cultural Influence: The song introduces the character of the 2 main girls in this movie. They talk about their childhood. The situation is possible in reality, minus the song. The song is melodious and the artists are good. Nutan’s facial expressions are good. The video can be seen several times.
