Another member of One Direction has decided to release a solo track in the midst of the boy band’s hiatus. Following up Niall Horan’s nostalgia-charged acoustic “This Town,” Tomlinson teamed up with producer and DJ Steve Aoki on “Just Hold On.”
It’s an electronic ditty that bates on positivity both sonically and lyrically. “Just Hold On” speaks to those battling something in life and serves as a reminder to keep going even in life’s toughest moments.
The first verse builds by asking some common philosophical questions people ask themselves (“What do you do when a chapter ends? Do you close the book and never read it again? Where do you go when your story’s done?” ). Then it collides with “ohs” that lead into the chorus, which states: “If it all goes wrong, darling just hold on.”
The message is definitely a relatable one. And Tomlinson seems poised to continue on in the EDM genre through his solo project. His soft tenor range blends seamlessly with the genre’s airy beats.
Sadly for Tomlinson, the song’s release coincided closely with the day of his mother’s death after a long battle with cancer. Tomlinson, in a moving and emotional performance, sang the song with Aoki for the first time on “The X Factor” finale the same week.
Tomlinson made his musical debut after appearing on the popular U.K. television series “The X Factor” in 2010. He auditioned as a solo artist but was eventually put into a band with four other contestants to form One Direction. The band released a handful of successful albums and propelled the modern British Invasion movement in the United States before announcing a hiatus last December. Currently, the band members are working on solo projects.
