Dharma or Dharam Chand (Amitabh Bachchan) is an amenable farmer. He has a sister Laxmi (Heena Kausar). He is very happy when his wife Radha (Waheeda Rehman) gives birth to a boy. They name the child Raju. To earn some extra money, he helps the 3 rich men Ajit (Anwar Hussain), Sujit (Sujit Kumar) and Suresh (Suresh) go hunting in the nearby jungle. Dharma also saves the life of Ajit, when he is attacked by a tiger. Ajit pays Dharma Rs.800 for the services and saving his life. He also tells Dharma if ever he wanted to visit the city, he would be given a job by them.
When farming did not give him enough earning, Dharma visits the city to be employed by Ajit. Soon, he finalizes his sister Laxmi’s marriage with an educated and rich boy. It is after that during the engagement celebrations that Dharma sings this song.
Song: The music of this song was composed by Kalyanji-Anandji and the lyrics were penned by Gulshan Bawra.
This song depicts the bonding between a brother and a sister. The brother says that he would decorate his sister’s doli (palanquin). During the farewell of the bride, he would smile and hide his sorrow of getting separated from his sister. For him, his younger sister is like a doll. She is the most special thing in his home. He further gives instructions on how she should behave in her in-laws’ home. He, finally, wishes that his sister would live happily at her in-laws and in her happiness, she should not forget them.
Video: The video opens with Amitabh Bachchan on the dholak (a percussion instrument – drum) among some women. The child (Raju) plays the clarinet and Amitabh Bachchan dances with him. Waheeda Rehman looks on smiling. Heena Kausar is also seen with another girl enjoying the celebrations.
Amitabh Bachchan begins the song. The other girl teases Heena Kausar wearing the disguise of a man. Heena Kausar goes to Amitabh Bachchan to complain. But, he folds his hands in front of them both. Heena Kausar then goes to Waheeda Rehman, who places a friendly arm around her shoulders.
Amitabh Bachchan performs a few steps. Raju again plays the clarinet. Amitabh Bachchan thinks about the time when his sister would be getting married according to the Hindu rites. He also thinks how he would escort her to her doli. He gets tearful. Waheeda Rehman brings him out of his reverie. The song ends and thus ends the video.
Artists: The playback of this song was sung by Mukesh and the onscreen performances are by Amitabh Bachchan, Heena Kausar, Waheeda Rehman and others.
Cultural Influence: In India, at least in the olden days, it was the duty of the brother in the absence of their parents to arrange and get his sister married to a good person. That is the background of this song. In North India, people arrange for ladies sangeet during engagement and marriage. This is a little twisted version, where the brother gets involved in the song. The song is good and so are the artists. The video is watchable for the above.
