I purposely chose this song together with the Gumnaam song, today, because both are similar songs.
Movie: This song appears in the 1982 movie Desh Premee (The Patriot) produced by Subhash Desai and directed by late Manmohan Desai under the banner of S S Movietone. The star-cast included Amitabh Bachchan, Hema Malini, Sharmila Tagore, late Parveen Babi, late Navin Nischol, late Amjad Khan, late Shammi Kapoor, late Premnath, late Uttam Kumar and Parikshit Sahni.
Master Dinanath (Amitabh Bachchan), a freedom fighter, had participated in the struggle against the British in 1942. After the independence was won in 1947, people’s love for the country diminished and they were busy betraying it. One example was the former British landlord Thakur Pratap Singh (Amjad Khan). Master Dinanath, having found out about Thakur Pratap Singh’s nefarious activities like smuggling of weapons and ammunition, gets him arrested.
As a revenge for putting him into prison, Thakur Pratap Singh asks his partner Sher Singh (Kader Khan) to kidnap Master Dinanath’s wife Bharti (Sharmila Tagore) and young daughter Priti, so that Master Dinanath begins to support them. But that does not happen. Thakur also convinces the villagers against Master Dinanath that he was betraying the country. Provoked villagers attack his home and Master Dinanath and his young son Raju are compelled to flee the place.
His wife contracts leprosy and escapes from Sher Singh after leaving Priti with a reliable friend. Master Dinanath is told that his wife and daughter are perhaps dead when they find her necklace near the train tracks. Though devastated by the loss of his wife and daughter, Master Dinanath and his son move on with their lives. They try to settle in a shanty town called Bharat Nagar, divided into 4 sections having a don ruling each one from different backgrounds – Muslim (Parikshit Sahni), South Indian – Telugu (Premnath), Bengali (Uttam Kumar) and Punjabi (Shammi Kapoor). Everybody loves their own section. Only Master Dinanath thinks himself as an Indian and sets about trying to bring peace between them. They settle their differences. However, they continue their illegal activities in their homes.
After 15 years, Raju (Amitabh Bachchan again) has grown up to be the opposite of his father. He begins to work with Thakur Pratap Singh without knowing that he had once abducted his sister and mother. He also marries Asha (Hema Malini) during a group wedding. During a diamonds deal, Thakur not only punishes him beating him up, he also tries to get Don (Prem Chopra) the man, whom he has transacted with for the diamonds, killed. Due to Don’s alertness, he saves himself.
Raju returns home and is caught by the police. Sher Singh shoots the police van escorting Raju and the Bharat Nagar dons and it falls into a nearby river. Though they do not find Raju’s dead body, everybody thinks that he is dead. He is found by Don and they decide to unite against Thakur Pratap Singh. They check into a hotel disguised as Black Americans. At this time, Raju wants to meet his wife. But, Don says that she might have married someone else. Raju decides to test her himself. It is at this time that he sings this song in the same attire of the Hyderabadi butler played by Mahmood in Gumnaam (1965)
Song: The music of this song was composed by Lakshmikant-Pyarelal and the lyrics were penned by Anand Bakshi.
The man is trying to convince his beloved to fall in love with him. He is actually her husband but she has not realized it. He also teases her mischievously.
Video: Cinematography is by Peter Pereira. Dance choreography is by Kamal-P L Raj.
Amitabh Bachchan has acted like Mahmood so well that my Mom asked me if the actor was Mahmood! No wonder I love both their acting. The video opens with a scene of the vegetable market. Hema Malini is buying vegetables moving about the stalls. Amitabh Bachchan wearing a disguise runs into the market holding a basket of vegetables on his head.
Hema Malini turns and realizes that the man is following her. She utters, “Disrespectful!” He begins to dance and goes on following her with a tender coconut placed on a knife. He also begins to sing this song. The coconut falls off the knife and he picks up a large cucumber to cut it into pieces.
He appears when she picks up a bunch of coriander to check it. She drops it back where it was when she sees him. Hema Malini is returning back home and is walking on a road. He follows her there as well. She stands at a bus stop and he is there as well. Amitabh Bachchan pulls up his lungi to fold it up and follow her.
Hema Malini complains to a group of 4 men playing cards nearby. Amitabh Bachchan beats them up and keeps following her. She gets into a local train and he follows her wearing a burkha. He lies down with his head on her lap. She pushes him away and he blocks her way. She is on a road again and he has followed her there as well.
He teases her and a constable comes that way. When the constable places his hand on his shoulder, Amitabh Bachchan runs away. He goes to sit on the backseat of a scooter. Thus, the video ends.
Artists: The playback of this song was sung by Kishore Kumar and Asha Bhonsle and the onscreen performances are by Amitabh Bachchan and Hema Malini.
Cultural Influence: The hero tries to test the heroine, his wife for her faithfulness. This is a typically filmi song. The song is good. The artists are excellent. The video is watchable for the above.
