This Asha Bhonsle song is one of my favorites.
Movie: This song appears in 1965 romantic family flick Chand Aur Suraj (Moon and Sun) produced and directed by Dulal Guha under the banner of Ganga Chitra. The star-cast of the film included Dharmendra, late Ashok Kumar, late Nirupa Roy, Tanuja and late Asit Sen. The music director Salil Chaudhary used the music of this song again in 1966 Malayalam movie Chemmeen’s song Chakara kadapuranthini ulsavamani chakara…
The movie begins with Chander Prakash (Ashok Kumar) working in his office. He receives a call from his younger brother Suraj Prakash (Dharmendra), who has just bagged the first position in the first year medical exams. Chander has been working in the office as well as taking tuitions to finance the education of his brother.
Suraj also says that he was coming home for vacations and tells his brother to reach home avoiding going for tuitions. At home, the elder brother and his wife convince Suraj to go to a rich man’s (Asit Sen) home to give tuitions to his daughter. This is because the rich man wanted Suraj to marry his daughter Kiran (Tanuja) and she wanted to speak to him once before that. Suraj thinks that he will have to tutor a small child. But, when he reaches the house, he encounters young girl Kiran singing this song.
Song: The song was penned by Shailendra and the music was composed by Salil Chowdhury.
Hindi poetic literature considers the bee and the flower as lovers. The girl compares herself to a bud, which has blossomed and filled the garden with its fragrance. Then she says that the bee has not come yet. She is indirectly calling her dream man as the bee.
Here the girl considers her eyes very beautiful and ready to intoxicate her dream man. But she is also afraid that he might never come.
Video: Cinematography is by M Rajaram. Dance choreography is by Herman Benjamin.
The video opens with Tanuja splashing the swimming pool water with her legs and sitting on the edge of it. When she gets up we get to know that she is wearing a bathing suit. She sings asking why her dream boy has not come into her life as yet. She moves about the entire garden in her home singing the song. There is a fountain in the garden. She puts a hand into the water in the fountain and splashes it.
She climbs a tree and walks on sturdy branches as well. Then she goes to the swimming pool and removes the bathing suit. She enters the swimming pool in the swimsuit and swims while singing. Soon Dharmendra enters and thus the song ends the moment she sees him.
Artists: The playback singer is Asha Bhonsle and Tanuja lip-syncs to the song. Dharmendra comes into the garden suddenly.
Cultural Influence: In rich families often girls are alone and they move about in the garden while thinking about these things. This is cinema, so it has been converted into a song. The video is worth watching for passing the time.
