She does not have a place to stay, so she decides to wait at the railway station and wait for the next train to Bombay. The next train is expected only next morning. She has an attaché case with lots of precious jewelry. She deposits it with the station master Rohit (Rajesh Khanna), which he locks safely in his safe. He also drops her at his quarters nearby for safety sake after she agrees to the suggestion.

It is obvious that Sonia is running away from someone and Rohit feels that she must have stolen the jewelry. But, she denies it. She also informs him that the jewelry was inherited by her from her mother and some goons have been chasing her due to it. He believes the story and goes back to the station thinking she is safe. He sits on his chair in his office and goes back in time to think about how he met his wife Rashmi (Zeenat Aman) for the first time.

Rohit is riding a motorcycle on his way to his uncle’s (Asit Sen) place for his cousin’s wedding. On the road, he has a race with a car. The car is being driven by Rashmi. Some time later, her car runs out of petrol. Rohit gives all the petrol from his motorbike, thinking he would get to ride with a beautiful female. But, the moment he fills the tank of her car with the fuel, she drives off leaving him with no petrol. He gets stuck on the road but manages to get a ride on a truck. It turns out that Rashmi also had gone to his cousin’s wedding.

They meet a few times during Rohit’s stay at his uncle’s place and fall in love with each other. Rashmi’s father Diwan Sardarilal (Hari Shivdasani) is looking for an assistant for her brother-in-law Moti Babu (Prem Chopra), who had been looking after the business till then. Rashmi introduces Rohit to her father and he agrees to appoint him. Rashmi feels that Moti Babu is not as honest as he appears to be and informs Rohit about it. Rohit begins auditing the records and discovers a lot of issues with the entries.

Moti Babu is worried that Rohit would discover the truth and he plots against Rohit. Rohit is blamed of raping a girl Bijli and is trashed by the Panchayat in front of the villagers. He is also told to leave the place immediately.

While Moti Babu celebrated his victory with Bijli, Rashmi witnesses it and gets disgusted. She runs away with Rohit to Bombay and gets married at a temple. 2 men wake Rohit up from his daydream. They say that they are Inspector Tiwari and Inspector Sinha and ask him about Sonia. They tell him that the girl had stolen some precious jewelry and has run away. Though suspicious, Rohit does not tell them where she is. He goes to his quarters and confronts her. She tells him that she hasn’t stolen anything and gives him her mother’s letter. After he reads it, he is convinced that she is innocent.

He returns to his office, while it is raining heavily outside. He remembers how he had enjoyed the rains with his wife Rashmi as newlyweds. In the flashback, he sings this song with Rashmi.
