Lakhon hai nigah mein – Rafi – O P Nayyar – Joy Mukherjee | Phir Wahi Dil Laya Hoon (1963)


Movie: This song appeared in 1963 hit romantic drama Phir Wahi Dil Laya Hoon (I’ve come back with the same heart) produced and directed by Nasir Hussain under the banner of Nasir Hussain Films. The movie starred late Joy Mukherjee, Asha Parekh, late Pran, late Rajinder Nath, etc.

Marital discord increases between Jamuna (Veena) and her husband Colonel Mahendranath and she leaves him. He does not give her their son, so she gets him kidnapped. Mother and son go and live in Srinagar. Mahendranath then brings up Mona, his friend’s daughter as a niece. He wants the now grown up Mona (Asha Parekh) to marry Biharilal alias Difu (Rajinder Nath), who has been to a foreign country and belongs to a wealthy family. But, Mona does not like him. Mahendranath wonders who would she like.

The next shot shows Jamuna’s son Mohan (Joy Mukherjee) has grown up. He sings this song as he returns home.

Song: The music of this song was composed by O P Nayyar and Majrooh Sultanpuri wrote the lyrics.

The man says that there are beautiful and young girls around. Their lips and eyes are beautiful. But, he is looking for some other thing in them. He does not know who or how his dream princess would be. Just in case she comes and meets him, he would not know her. There is a question in front of him. How would he recognize her? He does not even know her name. Sometimes, his dream princess comes and dances close to him. If this continued, he would be successful in locating her.

The video opens with Joy Mukherjee’s white canvas shoes clad feet moving on a lawn. The next shot is of many girls picnicking in the large garden. Joy Mukherjee is then seen with a guitar on his shoulder. He is wearing a pair of white trousers and a red sweater. He begins the song walking on the lawn. Some girls are seen running on another lawn. Some other girls are seen sitting in a row on another lawn.

The next shot is of several houseboats on the Dal Lake, Kashmir. Joy Mukherjee is seen sitting in a Gondola. A couple of girls are seen swimming in the chilly waters. Several Gondolas are seen moving in a row on the lake. He continues singing. A girl is seen skiing in the waters behind a motor boat.

There is another change of location to another garden, where some girls let go of some balloons. Joy Mukherjee is seen walking on a path at a height. A girl is seen wearing a pink sari and sitting with a red umbrella among flower plants. He approaches her and it turns out to be a eunuch. Joy Mukherjee slips down toward a lower level in fear and runs away from there.

The video ends with several balloons being let off and they move skyward.

Artists: The playback for this song was sung by Mohammad Rafi and the onscreen performance was by Joy Mukherjee.

Cultural Influence: The hero is walking around girls. But, they do not have what he wants in a girl. This can happen in reality, too. However, boys might think about it or may talk to their friends about it. The song is good and the video is watchable for the song and the artists, again and again.
