Holly Brook Hafermann, known better by her stage name, Skylar Grey is an American singer and songwriter from Wisconsin. At the age of 17 in 2004, Grey signed a publishing record deal with Universal Music Publishing Group. Under that label, she released her first debut album, “Like Blood Like Honey”, in 2006.
Grey co-wrote Rihanna and Eminem’s hit single, “Love The Way You Lie”, in 2010. After that Grey was signed to KIDinaKorner. Her album, “Don’t Look Down” was released in July 2013 and her third and most recent album, “Natural Causes”, was released on September 23, 2016.
Growing up Grey performed professionally with her mother in a duo called, Generations. Grey and her mother successfully produced three albums together independently. Sneaking into bars around Wisconsin, Grey at the age of 15 started her own band working with jazz musicians. In 2003 Grey moved to Los Angeles and started to record under her name Holly Brook, which was her stage name for quite a while. In Los Angeles, she got noticed by Linkin Park and Brad Delson and was signed to their label, Machine Shop Recordings, at the age of 18.
Brook changed her stage name to Skylar Grey and then moved to New York to meet her publisher Jennifer Blakeman for help. Grey was then partnered with record producer Alex da Kid and that is when she wrote her first song, “Love the Way You Lie”. Grey’s version of that song became a hit worldwide. Grey earned a Grammy nomination for song of the Year, for her writing contribution on that songs. Grey wrote the hook for all three versions of the songs. Grey received her first international television appearance at the 53rd Annual Grammy Awards, performing with Eminem and Dr. Dre for, “I Need A Doctor”.
Her way to fame wasn’t luck. Grey is actually a really great singer and she owns it. I think she is one of the most beautiful and empowering music artists. Grey is deeply passionate about her music. Her voice defines greatness. Listening to her music will give you the constant urge to listen to more. The sound of Grey’s voice really is addicting.
As a pure songwriter, Grey’s music career has been pretty successful. She wasn’t even ready for all of the attention that she has received. It is just something she loves to do every day and Grey’s love for music has only grown fonder. Grey has moved on from co-writing for others and is just really passionate about writing music for herself right now. It is where her heart is at the moment.
Her music is pretty different from other’s music and even the songs that she has co-written. Grey’s genre really is not defined. It is whatever you would like it to be.
Grey’s recent album, “Natural Causes (2016)”, is what we all have been waiting for. It is all about emotions and being present in the current moment. Given five out of five stars, this was a successful piece if work.
