59th Annual Grammy Award Nominations

Grammy nominations have been announced so it is time to discuss the love, the snubs and everything in between.

Beyonce is still the queen

To the surprise of absolutely nobody Beyonce received the most Grammy nominations, 9. It’s not yet clear if the nine Grammy nominations are for her album Lemonade or if they are an appeasement to keep the Bae hive from attacking The Recording Academy.

Other notables include Drake and Chance the Rapper. Drake is no stranger to the Grammy awards. In his career he has received 27 nominations and has won the “Best Rap Album” Grammy. This year he received 8 nominations. Chance the Rapper received seven nominations in five categories which is not too shabby for a newcomer (which again, not sure that he is a newcomer, but whatever).

The Life of Kanye

First J. Cole and now the Grammies? Seriously?! Kanye can’t catch a break this year. The beleaguered (to be fair a lot of it is his own fault) artist received eight nominations, but none of the major category nominations were for his own work. The Life of Pablo didn’t make the Album of the Year category; that prestigious group includes the aforementioned Beyonce and Drake as well as Adele, Justin Bieber, and Sturgill Simpson.

The Best Rap Album

Here we have some old school and new school love. Coming in from the way back machine it’s De La Soul with and the Anonymous Nobody… Ye’s The Life of Pablo, Drake’s Views, Chance’s Coloring Book, ScHoolboy Q’s Blank Face LP, and DJ Khaled’s Major Key round out the nominees for this group.

Snubs

Other than Kanye, who got snubbed? Travis Scott wasn’t too thrilled with being snubbed. The Boombox lists other snubs as Solange, YG and Kaytranada.

It’s understandable for artist’s to be upset, but that doesn’t take away from their music. If you’re favorite artist was snubbed the best way to support them is to buy a ticket to their show or purchase their album or single on iTunes. Unless it’s a Kanye concert ticket; it might be best to just hold off on that.

The Grammies will take place on February 12, 2017 at 8:00 PST.
