Mogambo (Amrish Puri) is an intelligent but mad General, who wants to overpower India. He keeps an eye on the evil-doings of his henchmen. “Hail Mogambo” is a formal salute all his minions have to say when they visit him and otherwise.
Arun Verma (Anil Kapoor) is an orphan and plays violin in the streets to earn a living. He rents a large but old house, where about a dozen orphaned children reside. He and his cook Calendar (Satish Kaushik) take care of them. Arun lives below the poverty line and owes money to the grocer Roopchand (Harish Patel) and he hasn’t paid his dues to the landlord Maniklal (Yunus Pervez). Despite these issues in his life, Arun tries to keep a positive attitude.
Eventually, Calendar reminds Arun that expenses of running the house were rising. Thus Arun goes to the local newspaper office to run an ad about renting out a room in their home. There he meets Investigative Reporter Seema Sahni (Sridevi). Seema decides to rent the room. Initially, there are tiffs because of the presence of too many children. During one of these tiffs, the children and Seema sing this song and Arun joins in. The current tiff is that while the children play football, they kick it into Seema’s room.
Song: The funny lyrics of this song were penned by Javed Akhtar and the catchy music was composed by Lakshmikant-Pyarelal.
The situation is that the children are playing and the football, when kicked, reaches the girl’s room. The children plead to the girl to return the ball. The man also joins in the plea. That is the gist of the song. This song is a combination of a few other Bollywood songs with the lyrics changed.
Video: Cinematography is by Baba Azmi. Dance has been choreographed by Saroj Khan.
The video opens with Sridevi about to puncture the football that fell into her room. The children begin the song and dance to its tune, too. Sridevi makes fun of them. The children go inside the house pleading with Sridevi. She closes all the windows. The children go to the outside and look at the upper floor balcony. Sridevi begins to sing saying that she would not return the football. The kids have a conference together and decide that one of them would plead on their behalf.
One girl comes forward and sings the song as it was originally written. The youngest girl comes forward to correct this girl. All the other children come forward together to plead with her. They climb the staircase to the balcony pleading with Sridevi. The youngest girl acts as if she is crying. Sridevi knows that it is a pretense and she goes forward to tell the little girl so. When Sridevi is close to her, the little girl tries to take the ball away. But, Sridevi does not allow it.
When Anil Kapoor begins to sing the song, the kids push Sridevi out of their way and run to him. Then, the kids request him to get the ball for them. While they do that they move in a circle around him and make faces at Sridevi. She also makes similar faces at them. Satish Kaushik requests Anil Kapoor to ask for the ball emphatically. While he does that he moves about delicately. Anil Kapoor begins pleading with Sridevi.
Anil Kapoor picks up the youngest girl and she kisses him on the cheek. He then walks toward Sridevi. They all enter her room and begin to argue. Sridevi sits on her bed and throws a pillow at the children and Anil Kapoor, who are sitting on the floor. A boy throws it back and there is a dual with the pillow between them. Sridevi’s wrist is hurt, when the pillow hits it and she jerks it in pain.
The argument attains a crescendo when the boys go to Anil Kapoor’s side and the girls go to Sridevi’s side. In this confusion, one boy picks up the ball and takes it away. Running away from the bed, he whistles to the others that he has the ball with him. All the children run back to their play and Anil Kapoor takes the ball to lead the children out of Sridevi’s room. The different facial expressions of Sridevi, at this juncture, are worth watching. The video ends with her letting out a yell.
Artists: The playback of this song was sung by Anuradha Paudwal and Shabbir Kumar and the onscreen performances are by Sridevi, Anil Kapoor, Satish Kaushik and kids.
Cultural Influence: The children plead with the heroine to return the football to them. Though they try to convince her, she is not ready to return it. This happens in real life every now and then. But, the makers have placed a song here at this juncture in the movie. The song is good and the video is watchable several times for the artists and the fun song.
