Movie: This song appeared in 1959 social romantic drama Anari (An Innocent Person) directed by late Hrishikesh Mukherjee and produced by L B Lachman under the banner of L B Films. The movie starred late Raj Kapoor, late Nutan, late Motilal, late Lalita Pawar, Shubha Khote, etc. This is one of few movies where Lalita Pawar had a positive role and Motilal’s had some shades of gray.
Raj Kumar (Raj Kapoor) is honest handsome, intelligent and young. He is also a painter. But, he cannot make ends meet with his works. He is also not able to pay rent to his kind-hearted but stern-behaving landlady Mrs. D’sa (Lalita Pawar). Once, Raj finds a wallet containing a lot of money and returns it to the rightful owner Mr. Ramnath (Motilal). Ramnath likes Raj’s honesty and employs him in his office as a clerk. Raj meets Ramnath’s maidservant Asha (Nutan) as well and both fall in love soon. Ramnath tells Raj to drop the cake he had bought for his niece’s birthday party at their home and on that day Raj discovers that Asha is none other than Ramnath’s niece Aarti. It is at this time that he sings this song.
Song: The lyrics of this song were penned by Shailendra and the music of this song was composed by Shankar-Jaikishan.
The man admits that he is an innocent person through this song. He also says that he can be really naïve at times.
Video: Cinematography is by Jaywant Pathare. Dance Choreography is by Satyanarayan.
The video opens with Cuckoo running down a staircase rhythmically. Cuckoo passes near Raj Kapoor and he begins the song. Nutan is sitting with an indecipherable expression on a sofa. In between the times Raj Kapoor is singing, Cuckoo is shown dancing. Nutan is seen bending her head down.
Raj Kapoor gives Nutan a bow while singing. He also bows in front of Shobha Khote, who had acted as the rich girl Aarti, on the insistence of Nutan’s character Aarti. He bows down in front of everybody and turns to leave. Motilal is surprised, why Raj Kapoor left. Nutan has tears in her eyes.
The video ends with the shot of a window, outside which it is raining cats and dogs with thunder and lightning.
Artists: The playback of this song was sung by Mukesh and the onscreen performances are by Raj Kapoor, Nutan, Shobha Khote, Motilal and others.
Cultural Influence: The hero goes for a party at the heroine’s home when he realizes the truth about the identity of the heroine. At that time, he feels that he is too naïve. This can happen in real life. But, songs are a part of movies and here also that cinematic liberty has been taken. The song is good and the video is watchable.
