On October 20, 2016 Chance the Rapper released his video for How Great from his mixtape Coloring Book.
The video is notable for being shot completely on an iPhone. For that reason the video is best viewed on a mobile device. At times the camera that shot the phone tilts to film in widescreen. If watching from your computer the horizontal frame is re-positioned vertically. Later the phone camera tilts back to a vertical position and the viewer is meant to tilt their phone along with it. It’s a small innovation that makes the video interactive and engaging.
The video begins with a woman singing the chorus How great is our God while looking into the camera. The camera moves around the stage and reveals a choir who sing backup in beautiful harmony with the lead vocalist. The singing is nearly a cappella, with only some light piano accompanying the vocals.
A full three minutes into the video the beat drops. A man seated on stage plays drums on a drum machine. Chance the Rapper finally makes his appearance and shadow dances before delivering a minute-and-a-half-long verse while the female choir continue to sing backup. Chance is joined onstage by Jay Electronica who enters from an illumined door. Electronica raps while Chance occasionally harmonizes for emphasis.
The video ends with Chance running off stage, clearly hyped. The song is a lovely, soulful tune. The lyrics and the choir’s harmonizing conjure up images of a gospel church.
How Great is featured on Chance’s third mixtape, Coloring Book, which was released in May of this year. Previously Chance had released Angels and No Problem as singles off of the album.
