A$AP Rocky, leader of the A$AP Mob has announced the arrival of the “Cozy Tapes Volume 1: Friends-.” The tape will be released on Monday October 31st as a collection of songs dedicated to Steve Rodriguez better known as A$AP Yams. In a recent interview with MTV, Rocky clarified that the artists on this project are all friends and hip-hop associates that Yams would have collaborated with. “Cozy Tapes” is the A$AP Mob’s second collaborative mixtape set to release and follows up their 2012 debut mixtape, “Lords Never Worry.”
News surrounding A$AP Mob members has been few and far between since the passing of A$AP Yams. Only A$AP Rocky’s “At. Long. Last. A$AP” and A$AP Ferg’s “Always Strive and Prosper” have been released since January 18, 2015. It is evident that Rocky and Ferg get the lion’s share of attention due to their talent, image and fan favorability. This new project is an opportunity for members like A$AP Ant, Twelvyy, Nast and Marty Baller to showcase their hip-hop ability.
In October 2015, Atlanta rapper and Soundcloud standout, Playboi Carti joined forces with the A$AP Mob. This addition led to the hit single by Carti and UnotheActivist, “What” where Rocky, LouBanga and other A$AP conglomerates are spotted in the video produced by AWGE and James Mackel. AWGE is an internal creative collective being formed by A$AP Rocky. Details surrounding AWGE’s meaning and artistic members are yet to be fully revealed. Certainly, this collective’s efforts will be showcased on Instagram in a new cryptic and imaginative approach to posts brought to us by A$AP Rocky.
In September, A$AP Rocky was named Creative Director of a new, “creative incubator” known as MTV Labs. This opportunity allows Rocky and members of his AWGE team to, “create original content…and develop branded content for advertisers.” On September 30, the A$AP Mob used their newly molded MTV platform to debut Cozy Tapes single, “Crazy Brazy” in Times Square. The concert included several A$AP members and provided a similar feel to the “TRL” performances that transpired several decades ago. Hopefully, MTV Labs will illustrate the same creative capacity displayed to us by, “Yo! MTV Raps” and portray the appreciation our generation upholds for original hip-hop artistry.
Most recently, A$AP Rocky released a twelve minute short film based in Northern London titled, “Money Man.” The black and white mini-movie positions Rocky amongst drama between a business associate and a love interest. It details the story of a bright young woman named Rina, who finds herself encased within a world of crime and calamity. Songs such as “Money Man (ft. ASAP Nast)” and “Put That on My Set (ft. Skepta)” are incorporated within the film as a brilliant way to promote the upcoming, “Cozy Tapes.”
