Shashi Kapoor and Babita make the lead pair of this movie. However, Babita went on to marry Randhir Kapoor, Shashi Kapoor’s elder brother Raj Kapoor’s son, in real life and gave up films.
Movie: This song is featured in the 1968 thriller Hasina Maan Jayegi (The Beautiful Girl will Accept my Love) produced by Indoo Bhushan and directed by Prakash Mehra (debut).
Archana (Babita) moves to a new city with her widower father. Rakesh (Shashi Kapoor) is her father’s friend’s son. He always teases her. She complains about him to the principal. But, Kamal (Shashi Kapoor again) gets punished instead. Kamal is an orphan and a decent person. When Archana realizes her mistake, she and Kamal grow close. However, Rakesh wants to marry Archana and keeps coming in between them. Archana and Kamal decide to marry.
Archana has to go back to Dehradun with her father for some reason. She writes a letter to Kamal from there. When Kamal receives the letter, he imagines that he is visiting Dehradun and is meeting Archana. That is when he thinks Archana sings this song and he sings with her.
Song: The music of this song was composed by Kalyani-Anandji and the lyrics were penned by Akhtar Roomani. This Lata-Rafi duet was the most popular among all the songs of this movie.
The song basically comprises of a yearning for the beloved and has been sung with the imagination of being with them.
Video: Cinematography is by N Satyen.
The video begins with Shashi Kapoor materializing in Dehradun and looking for Babita. He looks around for her and is attracted by her voice beginning the song. Shashi Kapoor is wearing a simple pair of trousers, a white turtleneck T-shirt and a jacket. Babita is wearing a light blue dress and looks like a blue Santa Claus!
Babita sits on the ground smiling. Shashi Kapoor is still looking for her. The camera, in the meantime, pans the location showing the beautiful nature. Babita and Shashi Kapoor run toward each other. When they see each other, both are happy and Shashi Kapoor takes over the song. Then they sing the song together.
There is a couple of change of dresses. The few shots taken near a rapidly flowing river is beautiful because of the color of the dresses of the lead pair – Babita’s dark blue and Shashi Kapoor’s white – complimenting the colors of the river and its bank.
The video ends with Shashi Kapoor sitting in his chair in his thoughts yearning for his beloved.
Artists: The playback for this song was sung by Lata Mangeshkar and Mohammad Rafi and the onscreen performances are by Babita and Shashi Kapoor.
Cultural Influence: The hero imagines this song the moment he received the letter of the heroine. Things like this can also happen in reality, though they would think about it rather than imagine a song. The lead pair is good and the song is also fantastic. The video is watchable several times.
