Yeh sama, sama hai yeh pyar ka – Lata – Kalyanji-Anandji – Nanda | Jab Jab Phool Khile (1965)

Movie: This song appears in the 1965 blockbuster Jab Jab Phool Khile (Whenever the Flowers Bloom) P.M Sethia and H.M Sethia and directed by Suraj Prakash. The movie starred Shashi Kapoor, late Nanda, Kamal Kapoor, Shammi, Mridula, Baby Farida, etc.

In Algeria’s cinema halls, this movie was screened every 2 days for 2 years, due to public demand. Shashi Kapoor was one of the favorite Indian actors in North African countries like Morocco, Algeria and Libya. Even today, some older shopkeepers in the souks of Marrakesh give a discount, when they find out that you are from the land of Shashi Kapoor.

The heiress of Raj Bahadur Chunnilal (Kamal Kapoor), Rita (Nanda) visits Kashmir during a holiday with her maidservant Stella (Shammi). She rents a houseboat there and becomes friends with its owner Raja (Shashi Kapoor). Raja is a naïve romantic village man, living with his younger sister Munni (Baby Farida). One evening, Rita sings this song moving and prancing about the terrace of the houseboat.

Song: The lyrics of this song were penned by Anand Bakshi and the music was composed by Kalyanji Anandji. The song was one of the highlights of the movie, as well.

The girl says, “This season is of love, of waiting for someone. I hope the season of spring does not steal my heart. Some such dreams began to live in my eyes that someone is beckoning me by his eyes. This season is of looking at the one, of waiting for one. I hope the season of spring does not steal my heart. Having met my beloved in my thoughts, I have lost my sleep, I swear. This season is of intoxication, of waiting for someone. I hope the season of spring does not steal my heart. I am the queen of the king of my dreams. This fake story should not become true. This season is of accepting love, of waiting for someone. I hope the season of spring does not steal my heart.”

Video: Cinematography is by Taru Dutt.

The video begins with Shashi Kapoor’s face in a close-up shot. He is wondering where the humming sound was coming from. Then he realizes that his tenant Nanda is singing. He is wearing a simple Kashmiri dress. Nanda is wearing a white gown. She is dancing to the tune of her own song.

Shashi Kapoor begins to watch her from the window of his boat. He is enjoying the song. Nanda is placing her hand at the nape of her neck often. She is wearing a bouffant hair style. I have heard that this and other such styles in those days were very heavy. Perhaps that is why she was placing her hand on her neck. May be it was aching. :/

Next, she sits on the lounge chair. Then he runs into the boat in which Nanda is staying and watches her from the trapdoor that goes to the terrace of the boat. When Nanda sings that she is the queen of the king of her dreams, he is shocked and thinks that she is singing about him. He does not realize that she is talking about an imaginary lover like any young girl without any boyfriend would think of.

Shashi Kapoor goes forward toward Nanda and stands before her. Nanda has her eyes closed. The video ends with Nanda opening her eyes and glancing at him.

Artists: The playback of this song was done by Lata Mangeshkar and the onscreen performances are by Nanda and Shashi Kapoor.

Cultural Influence: The heroine is just singing the song happily driven by the good climate and the ambiance. The hero watches her from the boat where he lives and then comes into his other boat, where the heroine is staying. Boys have a tendency to watch good looking girls. It is only natural. This is a movie, so they have shown it as a song sung by the heroine. The video can be watched for the veteran actors as well as the melody of the song.
