Sohni meri Soni Soni aur nahin koi honi – Anwar/Asha Bhonsle – Annu Malik – Sunny/Poonam | Sohni–Mahiwal (1984)

This is one of the earlier works of music composer Annu Malik and it is such a classic song. I have always known that Annu Malik had potential. But unfortunately, most of his works are crap.

Movie: This song appears in the 1984 India-Soviet collaborated tragic love story Sohni-Mahiwal (2 names) produced by F C Mehra and directed by Latif Faiziyev (Soviet Russia) and Umesh Mehra. The movie starred Sunny Deol, Poonam Dhillon, late Pran, Tanuja, late Shammi Kapoor, Zeenat Aman, Gulshan Grover, Rakesh Bedi, etc.

Prince Izzat Baig (Sunny Deol) visits India with his caravan and settles in a town in Gujrat searching for Sohni (Poonam Dhillon), whose picture he had seen in the water inside a ceramic container made by her. The moment he sees her, he is mesmerized and buys all the pottery that had been made by the family till then. Even Sohni is attracted to him. Izzat Baig tells her father Tulla (Pran) that he wants to study pottery before returning home. Tulla lets Sohni teach him and they get very close.

Soon, Noor (Gulshan Grover) spread disgraceful stories about both of them because Sohni’s parents did not give her in marriage to him. Afraid of disrepute, Tulla does not allow Izzat Baig to meet Sohni. But, where there is a will there is a way. Izzat Baig disguises himself as a cowherd and visits Sohni’s home once in the morning and once in the evening to see her. Sohni also meets him with the excuse of filling her pot with water from Chenab. It is during this time that both of them sing this song.

Song: The music of this song was composed by Annu Malik and the lyrics were penned by Anand Bakshi.

The man says, “Sohni, my lovely girl, Sohni. No one else will be mine, Sohni. I take your name more than God’s. Please God, forgive me. Please, do justice to me.”

The girl repeats the same changing the gender.

The man takes over, “There is no excuse for living. There is no place for dying. Without you, the world is dust, soil and ashes.”

The girl says, “I pray for you. I take away your troubles, morning and evening. I take your name more than God’s. Please God, forgive me. Please, do me justice.”

Then she calls him foreigner and asks, “O Beloved Foreigner, when I called you, how did you know that I was reminded of you?”

The man replies, “I take your message from the lovely wind. I take your name more than God’s. Please God, forgive me. Please, do me justice.”

The girl insists, “I might be afraid sometimes. I will do something to myself. I will die before parting from you.”

The man assures her, “Before the world comes and separates us, I will take your hand in marriage. I take your name more than God’s. Please God, forgive me. Please, do me justice.”

Video: Cinematography is by S Pappu.

The video opens with the scene of early morning in Sohni’s village. Poonam Dhillon is sweeping the courtyard of her home and at that time Sunny Deol comes to her gate with the buffaloes from all over the village. Poonam Dhillon sends their buffaloes as well with him. When he plays a stringed instrument, she realizes that it is Sunny Deol and she picks up a mud pot to follow him.

Sunny Deol drives the buffaloes into the water of Chenab River and Poonam Dhillon is not far behind. Sunny Deol has already entered the water and signals Poonam Dhillon to enter, as well. Poonam Dhillon uses her pot to keep her afloat while swimming toward him. Sunny Deol begins the song.

Poonam Dhillon is completely drenched and comes out of the water to begin dancing with the filled pot. She also begins to sing the song. The next shot shows that both have changed their apparel and Poonam Dhillon is dancing.

Sunny Deol then imagines how Poonam Dhillon would be welcomed when he returns to his home in Afghanistan with her. Then there is another change of dress. The video ends with both of them running in a field of purple flowering plants, together.

Artists: The playback singers are Anwar and Asha Bhonsle and Sunny Deol and Poonam Dhillon lip-sync to the song.

Cultural Influence: This movie is a takeoff from a legendary love story. The lead pair expresses their feelings and sings the song. The video is watchable several times for the artists, melodious song and the locale where it has been shot.
